Posted By: How May I Help You NC on March 21, 2018 When the University of Texas system and Texas Association of Community Colleges co-host their All Texas Academic Team medallion and certificate ceremony during a reception in the LBJ Auditorium in Austin March 30, three St. Philip's College students will be among the college's medallion recipients. Nominated by St. Philip's College faculty based on achievements both on- and off-campus, St. Philip's College's best-in-state students are Katrina King, Giselle Vasquez and Omar Hernandez (Photographed). Members of the team represent the best and brightest students who excel in academics, leadership and service. 2018 marks the fifth consecutive year students from St. Philip's College have received the award. The trio was selected in February as recipients of All Texas Academic Team membership for the 2018 season. Each year, approximately 100 outstanding community college students are selected from the 50 community college districts in Texas as members of the team, and SPC students have been recipients of the honor each of the previous four seasons. While Hernandez is a society member, King is chapter president and Vasquez is the chapter's vice president of fellowship. The chapter is one of the highest rated Texas in terms of productivity and public service, holding the organization’s 5-Star Chapter status, explained Maria Botello, one of the college’s chapter advisors. The University of Texas System with The Texas Association of Community Colleges hosts Vasquez, Hernandez and King at their medallion ceremony and reception March 30 at 2 p.m. in the Main Building Auditorium on the University of Texas at San Antonio campus. Competing colleges nominate up to two students, with nominations reviewed by the international honor society for two-year colleges---Phi Theta Kappa. According to the Phi Theta Kappa web site, the honor society, two-year college presidents, and community college state associations co-sponsor All-State Academic Team recognition programs in 32 states. All-State recognition programs are most often held in a state’s capital with legislators, education leaders, and corporate leaders attending. Nominations are based on outstanding academic performance and service to the college and community, according to the honor society web site. Ranking on the All-State Community College Academic Teams is generally determined by the student's score in the national competition. Texas' All-State Community College Academic Team members receive special recognition at the ceremonies including medallions and certificates that may include scholarships. If applicable, Coca-Cola Gold, Silver and Bronze Scholars are also recognized. For details on the college's nominees, contact Maria Botello, Psi Kappa Chapter Advisor, at 210-486-2199. http://www.alamo.edu/spc/ If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
