Misogynoir Transformed: How Nelly Made Me a Digital Alchemist

In 2010, Moya Bailey, Ph.D., C’2005, coined the phrase misogynoir to define the ways anti-Black and misogynistic representations shape ideas about Black women in visual culture and digital spaces. Since then, misogynoir has become a canonical phrase in understanding the various realities of in the lives of Black women. In her latest solo work, “Misogynoir Transformed: Black Women’s Digital Resistance,” Dr. Bailey speaks to the lives of cis-heterosexual Black women, while also prioritizing the digital realities of Black trans-women and queer folks who also face the varying effects of misogynoir in their own lives. Dr. Bailey shared insights from her new book, which is set to be released in May 2021, during this installment of "The Future is Intersectional: Black Women Interrogating Technology," an ongoing lecture series organized by the Spelman College Center of Excellence for Minority Women in STEM, in collaboration with the Atlanta University Center Data Science Initiative, UCLA Center for Critical Internet Inquiry and Mozilla.
