Voorhees College Professor Recalls Conversation on Former LA Lakers Player’s Podcast

Posted By: Kennedy Williams on March 29, 2022 Marcus Amos, a Voorhees College assistant professor, beamed with enthusiasm as he recalled a recent interview on former NBA player Michael Cooper’s podcast. Amos appeared on the Showtime with Coop podcast in February in celebration of Black History Month. Amos, who teaches sports management, joined Cooper, who played 12 years for the Los Angeles Lakers and was a winning coach in the WNBA, talked about a topic to which they both could relate—sports and society. “This was a great experience. I was honored as a professor and representative from a small HBCU, Voorhees College, when I received the call from Los Angeles Lakers great Michael Cooper, to be his first guest on the show for Black History Month,” Amos said. “Our conversation focused on families instilling guidance on Black History dialogues, within their homes, and issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion within sports and society.” Amos joined a high-profile list of guests who have appeared on the podcast, including basketball greats Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Jerry West, members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and Terrell Owens, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. “It was truly a pleasure having Dr. Amos as a guest on Showtime with Coop,” Cooper said. “He brought a different insight and was very knowledgeable in his explanation of our topic; Sport and the Black Athlete, for Black History month. I know listeners, young and old, enjoyed this episode.” Amos said he was happy to represent Voorhees, the School of Business & Entrepreneurship and sports management on the podcast. He will use the discussion points with students in his Role of Sport in Society course. “I believe that our conversation provided a powerful insight into the importance of family history discussions, the state of sports, and the need to move forward in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within society, and the workplace,” Amos said.
