Question: Why is Tennessee State University spreading the word about AI to other HBCUs? Short Answer: It's the future. Long Answer: Tennessee State’s Robbie Melton said artificial intelligence – also know as AI — is transforming society. And Melton wants historically Black college and universities to be at the forefront of this cutting-edge technology. Right now, within seconds, users can ask ChatGPT to create blogs, news stories, and book reports. How to build a coffee table or change a flat tire. Bake fudge. Or more technical queries such as how to become an airline pilot or trade successfully on the stock market. “It is going to change how we teach, how we learn — better,” said Melton, the vice president of Technology Innovation Strategies and acting vice president of Student Affairs at TSU. Because of this, Melton added, society is moving from memorizing information to analyzing it. “You just use your own mind to further your learning,” said TSU graduate student Bryson Scott. On June 1, Melton spoke with HBCU peers at a virtual seminar, hoping to share the importance of the new tech. The Nashville-based college, which boosts the nation’s only HBCU Smart Technology Innovation Center, enjoys partnerships with tech giants Microsoft and Apple, as well as T-Mobile, Amazon, and other major companies. Right now, Melton said, AI allows people to see and hear virtual experiences. In the future, she believes it will allow users to touch and taste these same experiences. Including that fudge. “It will grow to become a fully-emersed sensory type of computer or machine,” she said. “It may even appear as you, but not really be you.” SOURCE The Tennessean If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
