Winston-Salem State University was ranked by Washington Monthly magazine as the No. 1 HBCU in the Southeast for “Best Bang for the Buck” for the 2023-24 academic year. The ranking is based on how well schools help non-wealthy students earn high-quality marketable degrees for affordable prices.

Washington Monthly evaluated 1,487 four-year institutions. Its rankings consist of three equally weighted portions: social mobility, research, and community and national service. Each four-year institution selected needs to be excellent across all three categories to earn a high ranking.

WSSU has garnered several accolades for helping students attain economic and social mobility including being named by CollegeNET as the No. 1 HBCU for social mobility in the United States, being recognized by the New York Times as the No. 1 university for economic mobility in North Carolina and being listed among the Best Colleges in America by Money magazine.

Every year, Money magazine identifies colleges and universities that provide students with a high-quality and affordable education that leads to positive career outcomes. The magazine made its determination based on graduation rates, peer quality, student-to-faculty ratio, the net price for earning a degree, the average amount of student debt upon graduation, ability to repay debt, employment outcomes, return on investment and economic mobility.

Money magazine awarded WSSU 3.5-stars on the magazine’s 5-star ranking system. Other schools that received a 3.5-star ranking include Georgia State, Southern Methodist and North Carolina A&T.

This is one of several recent rankings that recognize WSSU’s success in elevating the social and economic well-being of its graduates. The New York Times ranks WSSU as the No. 1 university in North Carolina for economic mobility. CollegeNET names WSSU the No. 1 HBCU in the U.S. for social mobility and Washington Monthly lists WSSU as the No. 2 HBCU in North Carolina for most “bang for the buck.”

Economic mobility is a key factor for measuring student success. Economic mobility demonstrates how college students from low- and moderate-income backgrounds progress into high-paying jobs and careers as well as their ability to pay off the cost of their education.

According to Money, the average early-career earnings of WSSU graduates is $41,000 per year, and the average time to a degree is 4.4 years. Graduates of WSSU earn 59% more than high school graduates.
