Sanetta Gipson's “Our Family Secret: My Life With Momma”

Posted By: Robert Walker on October 25, 2023

Sanetta Gipson is an actress, singer and author who has penned a deeply personal memoir "Our Family Secret: My Life with Momma' about the challenges and despairing effects her mother's mental illness had on her childhood and family.

Sanetta writes: Imagine Clair Huxtable from TV’s “The Cosby’s Show”, beautiful and brilliant, with a debilitating mental illness that ultimately destroys her perfect family.

Mental health issues in the United States is a huge problem because misdiagnosis of a disease like bi-polar disorder are high, especially in the African-American community where the stigmatization of the illness is often not treated properly due to shame, guilt, or indifference.

As aptly stated in Gipson's book title, these types of illnesses are ignored or denied becoming a Family Secret, that often leaves the loved ones with the agonizing task of dealing with a person who has a serious need of medical help.

The other part to that is often times the person who is suffering from a bi-polar illness will lapse into denial about what they may be experiencing that leads to depression, anger, and unfortunately denying the help from family and medical professionals.

I recently interviewed Sanetta about her book and her hopes for it to reach a wider reading audience about bi-polar disorders in raising awareness of how this disease impacted her mother and her family.
