EXPLORING BLACK CULTURAL NARRATIVES: UC SANTA BARBARA AND TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY'S NEW TV WRITING INITIATIVE

EXPLORING BLACK CULTURAL NARRATIVES: UC SANTA BARBARA AND TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY
Posted By: Catalina Deossa on July 09, 2024

The pilot program at UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) is designed to address the need for diverse voices in screenwriting, particularly from historically underrepresented communities such as Hispanic and Black populations. This initiative bridges the gap between UCSB, designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), and Tuskegee University, an Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in Alabama.

Led by UCSB's Dean of Humanities and Fine Arts, Daina Ramey Berry, in collaboration with film and television executive Adriane Hopper Williams, the program hosts ten Booker T. Washington Scholars from Tuskegee University. These scholars participate in a six-week summer program at UCSB, engaging in classes focused on TV writing, introduction to cinema, and hands-on experiences including field trips to Los Angeles studios. The aim is to provide these students with essential skills and exposure to the entertainment industry, which they may not have had access to previously.

The program not only seeks to prepare students for careers in film and media but also aims to plant seeds for an entertainment industry presence in Tuskegee itself.

By leveraging the expertise of top-level educators and industry professionals, including partnerships with entities like DNA Media Group and The Legacy Lives: Tuskegee, the program aims to foster a supportive environment for learning and growth.

For Tuskegee University, which is in the process of developing its own film and media studies program, this collaboration marks a significant step forward. The long-term goal is to establish a full-fledged degree program in film and media arts at Tuskegee, building upon the foundational experience and expertise gained through this partnership with UCSB.

Instructor Wendy Eley Jackson, herself a native of Alabama with deep ties to Tuskegee, teaches the flagship course in writing for television. Her personal connection to the region and its cultural nuances enhances the learning experience, emphasizing the importance of writing to voice and capturing authentic cultural perspectives in storytelling.

Beyond academic enrichment, the program also includes interactions with industry leaders and professionals, such as Ayo Davis of Disney Studios and Jamila Hunter of MACRO Television, providing invaluable networking opportunities and industry insights to the students.

Overall, the UCSB-Tuskegee summer scholars program represents a proactive approach to diversity and inclusion in the entertainment industry. It aims not only to empower students with the skills and opportunities needed to succeed but also to amplify diverse voices and narratives in mainstream media, thereby contributing to broader social transformation through storytelling.
