Exclusive Interview with Angela Johnson-Neely

Introduction: Devine Jamz Gospel Network had the honor of interviewing Angela Johnson-Neely, an incredibly talented and dynamic artist. Known for her soulful voice, passion for music, and versatility across genres like Contemporary Gospel, classic R&B, jazz, and blues, Angela has captivated audiences worldwide. With the release of her new single, Cruisin', she continues to impress by taking listeners on a musical journey of smooth vibes and classy celebration. In this exclusive interview, Angela shares insights into her music, inspiration, and creative process.

Devine Jamz: Angela, welcome back to Devine Jamz! Can you share with us the difference between your debut charting single Good Morning Lord and your new track Cruisin'? What’s the inspiration behind the music that brought Cruisin' all together?

Angela: Thank you! I absolutely love Good Morning Lord and the message it shares about being thankful for our many blessings. However, Cruisin' takes a different approach. It’s a fun and uplifting song about enjoying life and looking good while doing it! It’s all about celebrating the good moments in life with a carefree and joyful attitude.

Devine Jamz: How do you balance that crossover between Contemporary Gospel, R&B, jazz, and a more modern dance vibe in your music?

Angela: I’ve always loved my Christian music, but as an artist, I believe it’s important not to limit yourself. Music is about expressing what you’re feeling in the moment, and true creativity flows when you let it. Balancing different genres allows me to connect with a diverse audience while staying true to my passion for storytelling through music.

Devine Jamz: Can you paint us a picture of the scene and how the energy there influenced the sound of the song?

Angela: Absolutely! One of my favorite spots to perform is Café Centro.

It’s a chic venue where everyone comes dressed with elegance and style, ready to dance the night away. The energy there is infectious, and it inspired the vibrant, feel-good vibe of Cruisin'. It’s all about capturing that atmosphere of class and celebration.

Devine Jamz: You’ve done such a great job creating a unique vibe with your performances. For those who may not have seen you live yet, how would you describe the atmosphere of your Sade Tribute Show and what it brings to your audiences?

Angela: Thank you so much! The Sade Tribute Show is an amazing event. I thoroughly enjoy celebrating and portraying Sade’s iconic music and style. The show is always a great time, especially when the audience is engaged and singing along to the well-known hits. I’m fortunate to work with an incredible tribute band and singers who bring the music to life. It’s truly a celebration of Sade’s legacy.

Devine Jamz: From a live performance to a dinner show, you offer a variety of performance experiences. What’s the energy like when you switch between a big stage performance and a more intimate setting?

Angela: Both settings have their charm. The big stage is exhilarating and full of high energy, but there’s something magical about an intimate dinner show. In those smaller settings, I get to connect with the audience on a deeper level. We laugh, dance, and enjoy the music together—it’s a truly personal experience.

Devine Jamz: Your voice is such a standout, with this captivating mix of power and grace. Can you talk a bit about how your vocal style has evolved over the years and any other artists that have influenced you along the way?

Angela: Thank you! My vocals have definitely evolved a lot over the years. I started singing in my church choir, which gave me a strong foundation. Later, I branched out to collaborate with local artists, which helped me grow as a performer. Some of the artists who have influenced me are legends like Aretha Franklin, Natalie Cole, Donna Summer, and, of course, Sade. They’ve each inspired me to explore different styles and refine my own sound.

Devine Jamz: Music is clearly a passion for you, and your work is all about connecting with your audience. What do you hope listeners take away from Cruisin' and how does the song reflect your personal musical journey?

Angela: Dancing and moving evoke a sense of joy and freedom of expression. It’s also a great way to connect with others. Cruisin' is all about living life to the fullest, connecting with amazing people, and doing it all with elegance and style. It reflects my journey of celebrating life through music and sharing that joy with my listeners.

Devine Jamz: You’re known for collaborating with so many talented musicians. How do you approach collaboration, and what makes a successful partnership when working with other artists?

Angela: Collaboration is all about trust and respect. Most artists are very sensitive about their projects, so it’s important to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable expressing their creative style, thoughts, and experiences. On this project, we achieved just that, and the results speak for themselves.

Devine Jamz: Finally, we know you’re always exploring new styles and pushing your creative boundaries. What’s next for Angela Johnson-Neely? Are there any new projects or performances you’re excited about that you can share with our audience?

Angela: Stay tuned…
