A Legacy in the Making: The Johnson Brothers Make History at Norfolk State University

Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on May 21, 2025 FEATURED Content At Norfolk State University, history was made when brothers Jaylen and Jevon Johnson became the first sibling pair to pledge into two of the most prestigious Black Greek-letter organizations—Kappa Alpha Psi and Alpha Phi Alpha—on the same day. More than a symbolic moment, their dual initiation signified perseverance, excellence, and the strong familial and cultural bond that defines the HBCU experience. For Jaylen, a transfer student and member of the Class of 2026, this achievement was more than just crossing into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated—it was a testament to resilience and hard work. “It means a lot to be able to do something as special as this,” he shared. “It makes it even more powerful being able to share this moment with my brother. We were both initiated into different fraternities on the same campus and even had the same line number—#6. That’s never happened before at NSU.” Jevon, a DNIMAS and Presidential Scholar in the Class of 2027, echoed the sentiment. “It was a moment of shared pride, growth, and Black excellence. We’ve each overcome our own challenges and worked tirelessly to reach this point. Crossing into these historic organizations together, while still maintaining our individuality, was a powerful symbol of our bond and our purpose.” Academically, both brothers have demonstrated excellence through prestigious honors programs. Jaylen, a Robert C. Nusbaum Honors Scholar, has used his scholarship experience to elevate not just his GPA but his mindset. “Being part of this program has helped me hold my academic standing in a higher light,” he said. “It’s pushed me to develop critical thinking, connect with like-minded peers, and build a solid foundation for the next step in my academic journey.” Jevon, a DNIMAS Scholar majoring in computer science, found the same level of challenge and support in his academic path. “DNIMAS has been one of the most defining parts of my college experience,” he said. “It’s both an honor and a responsibility. I’ve been pushed to excel, and in return, I’ve gained opportunities, lifelong connections, and a deeper sense of self as a Black man in STEM.” When it comes to career ambitions, the brothers have chosen distinct yet equally impactful paths. Jaylen’s passion lies in human movement and wellness. He is majoring in Exercise Science/Kinesiotherapy with the goal of becoming a Doctor of Physical Therapy. “I’ve always been fascinated by how the body works,” he explained. “Being able to use that knowledge to help people improve their lives is what inspires me every day.” Jevon, on the other hand, has long been intrigued by the inner workings of technology. His focus on cybersecurity stems from a desire to protect people in a digital world. “Cybersecurity feels like a calling,” he said. “NSU and the DNIMAS program have given me the foundation, mentorship, and real-world experiences to pursue this career with confidence and purpose.” The impact of Greek life has also played a transformative role in their leadership development. For Jaylen, Alpha Phi Alpha has refined his skills and strengthened his voice. “It’s helped position me as a positive force on campus,” he said. “Being an Alpha man means standing for excellence, leadership, and service.” Jevon has found a similar evolution through Kappa Alpha Psi. “It’s elevated my leadership, my discipline, and my sense of purpose,” he shared. “It’s more than a network—it’s a brotherhood that challenges me to be better, to do better, and to lead with integrity.” To other young men considering the HBCU path or Greek life, the brothers offer powerful advice grounded in experience. Jaylen encourages students to overcome fear and take initiative. “Don’t let doubt stop you,” he said. “When I transferred in, I wasn’t sure what opportunities would be open to me. But by getting involved—as the Transfer Student Association President, in Black Men in Medicine, the NSU Male Initiative, and more—I was able to show who I was. Let your light shine.” Jevon emphasized preparation and self-awareness. “Trust your instincts but do the research,” he said. “Joining a fraternity or choosing an HBCU isn’t just about the moment—it’s about the legacy. Make sure you’re ready to rise to the occasion and surround yourself with people who will help you grow.” Together, the Johnson brothers are not just making history—they’re building a legacy of leadership, scholarship, and brotherhood that will inspire generations to come.
