Posted By: Will Moss on January 29, 2026

Memphis, TN - The Southern Heritage Classic, a beloved annual tradition for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the Mid-South region, is set to make its highly anticipated return this September.

The Classic, which features a football matchup between Jackson State University and Tennessee State University, has been a staple of the Memphis community for over 30 years. After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event is poised for a historic comeback that is sure to excite HBCU alumni, students, and supporters across the country.

Key Takeaway: The return of the Southern Heritage Classic marks a significant milestone for the HBCU community, as it signifies the resilience and enduring legacy of these institutions in the face of adversity.

The two-day event, scheduled for September 10th and 11th, will once again transform the city of Memphis into a vibrant celebration of HBCU pride and culture. In addition to the highly anticipated football game, the Classic will feature a stepped-up battle of the bands, a parade, and a host of other festivities that have become hallmarks of this iconic event.

"We are thrilled to welcome back the Southern Heritage Classic to Memphis," said Fred Jones, the event's founder and organizer.

"This event has always been about more than just football - it's a chance for our HBCU community to come together, celebrate our heritage, and showcase the incredible talent and energy that defines our institutions."

The return of the Southern Heritage Classic comes at a pivotal moment for HBCUs, which have seen a surge in enrollment and renewed national attention in recent years. As these institutions continue to play a vital role in shaping the next generation of Black leaders and innovators, events like the Classic serve as a powerful reminder of the enduring impact and importance of HBCUs within the broader higher education landscape.

"The Southern Heritage Classic is not just a game - it's a celebration of the rich history and bright future of HBCUs. We're thrilled to see this iconic event make its triumphant return to Memphis, and we know it will be a moment of immense pride and unity for the entire HBCU community."
