Tibetan Monks Conclude National Peace Tour With Stop at Virginia Union University

Tibetan Monks Conclude National Peace Tour With Stop at Virginia Union University
Posted By: Will Moss on February 03, 2026

Virginia Union University (VUU), a renowned Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in Richmond, Virginia, recently hosted a group of Tibetan Buddhist monks as part of their national 'Walk for Peace' tour.

The monks, who have been traversing the United States since March, made a stop at VUU to rest and share their message of compassion and non-violence with the university community. This visit was significant as it aligned with VUU's core values of social justice, service, and interfaith collaboration.

Key Takeaway: The Tibetan monks' visit to Virginia Union University, a prominent HBCU, underscores the shared principles of peace, unity, and community engagement that are central to both the Tibetan Buddhist tradition and the HBCU experience.

During their time on campus, the monks participated in various activities, including a guided meditation session, a lecture on Tibetan Buddhist philosophy, and an interactive cultural exhibition. These events were open to the VUU community, as well as the broader Richmond area, and were well-attended, reflecting the deep interest and respect for the Tibetan Buddhist tradition.

Dr. Hakim J. Lucas, President of Virginia Union University, expressed his gratitude for the monks' visit, stating, "We are honored to host these esteemed Tibetan Buddhist monks and to share in their message of peace and compassion.

As an HBCU, we are committed to fostering understanding and cooperation across cultures, and this visit aligns perfectly with our institutional values."

"The monks' presence on our campus has been a truly enriching experience for our students and faculty. We are grateful for the opportunity to learn from their teachings and to engage in meaningful dialogue about the pursuit of peace and justice."

The Tibetan monks' stop at Virginia Union University was the culmination of their national 'Walk for Peace' tour, which has seen them visit numerous colleges, universities, and community centers across the United States. This visit not only provided the VUU community with a unique cultural and educational experience but also highlighted the shared values and commitment to social progress that exist between the Tibetan Buddhist tradition and the HBCU community.

As the Tibetan monks depart from Virginia Union University, the legacy of their visit will continue to inspire the HBCU community to further embrace the principles of non-violence, compassion, and global understanding that are central to their mission and identity.
