Morehouse College Fined $100K for Title IX Violations, Tuskegee University Hires Civil Rights Attorney
Posted By: Will Moss on February 03, 2026

Morehouse College, the prestigious all-male HBCU in Atlanta, Georgia, has been fined $100,000 by the U.S. Department of Education for failing to properly investigate and respond to reports of sexual assault and harassment on campus.

The investigation found that Morehouse, which has an enrollment of over 2,200 students, did not comply with Title IX regulations in handling multiple cases of sexual misconduct between 2013 and 2016. The college was cited for not providing adequate support services for survivors, not thoroughly investigating complaints, and not taking appropriate disciplinary action against perpetrators.

Key Takeaway: This fine highlights the ongoing challenges that some HBCUs face in addressing campus sexual violence and upholding their Title IX obligations to protect students.

In a separate incident, Tuskegee University, the historically black university in Alabama, has announced that its head football coach is hiring a prominent civil rights attorney to represent him.

Coach Julian Edmonds is facing allegations of verbal abuse and creating a hostile environment for players on the team.

Tuskegee, which has a storied history in sports and produced notable NFL players like Buck Buchanan, has not released any further details on the nature of the complaints against Coach Edmonds. However, the university stated that it is taking the allegations seriously and will conduct a full investigation.

"We are committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for all of our student-athletes. We will carefully review this matter and take appropriate actions based on the findings of the investigation."

These two cases highlight the ongoing need for HBCUs to vigilantly uphold Title IX and ensure their campuses are safe, inclusive, and free of discrimination. The HBCU community will be closely watching how Morehouse and Tuskegee handle these sensitive issues that impact the student experience.
