FAMU's Markquese Bell and Other HBCU Stars Set for 2022 NFL Draft

FAMU
Posted By: Will Moss on February 05, 2026

Florida A&M University (FAMU) defensive back Markquese Bell is one of the top prospects from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) expected to be selected in the upcoming 2022 National Football League (NFL) Draft.

Bell, who was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Defensive Player of the Year in 2021, is projected to be a mid-round pick after a standout college career with the Rattlers. He led FAMU with 95 tackles and four interceptions last season, helping the team to an 9-3 record and a berth in the Playoffs Subdivision (FCS) playoffs.

Key Takeaway: HBCU players like Markquese Bell are gaining more attention from NFL scouts, showcasing the talent found at these institutions.

In addition to Bell, several other HBCU standouts are expected to hear their names called during the 2022 NFL Draft, which takes place April 28-30 in Las Vegas.

These include:

  • Jordan Lewis, defensive back, Southern University
  • James Houston IV, linebacker, Jackson State University
  • Ja'Tyre Carter, offensive lineman, Southern University
  • Malik Hamm, defensive end, Central State University

The increased visibility of HBCU players in the NFL Draft is a testament to the quality of talent and coaching found at these institutions. HBCUs have a rich history of producing professional football stars, from Walter Payton (Jackson State) to Jerry Rice (Mississippi Valley State).

"These players have worked hard and deserve this opportunity to showcase their skills on the biggest stage. HBCU athletics continue to produce high-caliber talent, and we're excited to see how these young men perform at the next level."

HBCUConnect.com is proud to highlight the achievements of these HBCU standouts as they pursue their NFL dreams. The success of players like Markquese Bell and others reinforces the importance of supporting and investing in these vital institutions that have been integral to the African American community for generations.
