SWAC Penalizes Players and Schools Following Postgame Incident

The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) has announced disciplinary actions against four basketball players and their respective schools following an altercation that took place after a women's basketball game between Southern University and Alabama State University.

The incident occurred on January 28th, 2023, as the two teams were leaving the court.

According to reports, the confrontation escalated, leading the SWAC to launch an investigation.

Key Takeaway: The SWAC has taken swift action to maintain the integrity of its competition and ensure the safety of student-athletes.

As a result of the investigation, the SWAC has issued the following penalties:

  • Suspensions: Two players from each team have been suspended for one game.
  • Fines: Both Southern University and Alabama State University have been fined an undisclosed amount.

The SWAC, which is composed of 12 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the southeastern United States, takes pride in fostering a culture of sportsmanship and respect among its member institutions.

"We have zero tolerance for any behavior that jeopardizes the safety and well-being of our student-athletes," said SWAC Commissioner Dr. Charles McClelland. "The conference will continue to uphold its standards and take appropriate action when necessary."

HBCUConnect.com, the premier online community for HBCU alumni and supporters, applauds the SWAC's swift and decisive response to this incident. By holding its member institutions and student-athletes accountable, the conference demonstrates its commitment to maintaining a positive and inclusive environment for collegiate athletics.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of sportsmanship, respect, and the core values that HBCUs strive to instill in their student-athletes. The HBCU community can take pride in the SWAC's action, as it upholds the principles that have long defined the rich history and legacy of these institutions.
