Howard University Basketball Teams Make History with MEAC Championship Sweep
Posted By: Will Moss on March 15, 2026

Howard University has achieved a historic milestone in athletics, with both the men's and women's basketball teams capturing Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) titles in the same season for the first time since 1992.

The dual championship marks a significant moment for the Washington, D.C.-based institution, demonstrating excellence across both programs and ending a more than three-decade wait for such a distinguished accomplishment. The last time the Bison achieved this feat was over 30 years ago, making this season particularly memorable for the university's athletic department.

Historic Achievement: Howard's men's and women's basketball teams have both won MEAC titles in the same season for the first time in 32 years, a milestone last achieved in 1992.

The championship sweep represents a resurgence for Howard athletics and highlights the strength of the university's basketball programs. Both teams demonstrated exceptional skill and determination throughout the season, culminating in conference championship victories that have brought pride to the Howard community.

This accomplishment is particularly significant within the context of HBCU athletics, where conference championships serve as crucial stepping stones to national tournament appearances and increased visibility for historically Black institutions.

The MEAC, one of the most prominent athletic conferences among HBCUs, has long been a competitive proving ground for talented student-athletes.

For Howard University, a private research institution founded in 1867, this athletic success adds to a legacy of excellence that spans academics, athletics, and cultural impact. The Bison have a storied athletic tradition, and this simultaneous championship victory reinforces the university's commitment to developing well-rounded student-athletes.

The 1992 season, the last time Howard achieved this dual-title distinction, represents a benchmark moment in the university's athletic history. The fact that both programs have now reached championship status together again speaks to the quality of coaching, recruitment, and athletic development at the institution.

This historic sweep not only brings recognition to Howard University but also shines a spotlight on the competitive excellence within HBCU athletics and the MEAC conference. The achievement serves as an inspiration to current and prospective student-athletes considering historically Black colleges and universities for their academic and athletic careers.
