Posted By: Will Moss on March 20, 2026

Southern University and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) secured victories in postseason tournament action, while Howard University and Alabama A&M University (AAMU) saw their seasons come to an end in recent basketball competition.

The mixed results across multiple HBCU basketball programs highlight the competitive nature of postseason play, with institutions representing different conferences experiencing varied outcomes on the hardwood.

Quick Summary: Four HBCU basketball programs competed in postseason tournaments with Southern and UMES earning wins while Howard and Alabama A&M were eliminated from further competition.

Tournament Winners

Southern University, representing the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), advanced in postseason play with their victory. The Jaguars continued their season with the win, keeping their championship aspirations alive.

UMES also secured a crucial postseason victory, extending the Hawks' season and demonstrating the program's competitive prowess during tournament play. The win represents an important milestone for the Maryland-based institution as they pursue postseason success.

Season Endings

Howard University, one of the most prominent HBCUs in the nation and a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), saw its season conclude with a postseason loss.

The Bison's elimination marks the end of another competitive campaign for the Washington, D.C.-based institution.

Alabama A&M University also fell in postseason competition, bringing the Bulldogs' season to a close. The SWAC program was unable to advance past their tournament matchup, concluding their basketball season.

HBCU Postseason Results:
  • Southern University - Victory (advancing)
  • University of Maryland Eastern Shore - Victory (advancing)
  • Howard University - Eliminated
  • Alabama A&M University - Eliminated

The postseason tournaments provide critical opportunities for HBCU basketball programs to showcase their talent on regional and national stages. These competitions often determine conference champions and can lead to NCAA tournament berths or other prestigious postseason invitations.

As the postseason continues, Southern and UMES will look to build on their victories and advance further in their respective tournaments, carrying the banner for HBCU basketball excellence.
