The Poet’s Charge: Civility, Social Justice, and Speaking Truth in Troubled Times In an era marked by division, upheaval, and urgent calls for justice, poets continue to serve as witnesses, truth-tellers, and moral compass-bearers for society. The Poet’s Charge brings together three of the most influential literary voices of our time—Chris Abani, Kwame Dawes, and Nikky Finney—for a powerful and timely conversation on civility, social justice, and the responsibility of artists to speak boldly in troubled times. The discussion will be moderated by Jennifer Bartell Boykin, Columbia’s Poet Laureate, whose work and leadership embody the intersection of art, advocacy, and civic engagement. Together, the panel will explore how poetry and storytelling confront injustice, nurture empathy, and help communities imagine and work toward a more humane and equitable future. The conversation will reflect on the role of the poet as public intellectual, cultural critic, and builder of civic dialogue—especially in moments of national and global reckoning. 📅 Wednesday, April 15, 2026 🕡 6:30 PM (ET) 📍 Allen University – Boeing Institute of Civility 2200 Hampton Street, Columbia, SC 29204 Presented by Allen University, this event invites students, scholars, writers, and community members to engage deeply with language, conscience, and the enduring power of the spoken word. Join us in person or online for an evening of reflection, challenge, and inspiration. #ThePoetsCharge #SpeakingTruth #PoetryAndJustice #CivilityInAction #SocialJusticeArts #AllenUniversity #BoeingInstituteOfCivility #ChrisAbani #KwameDawes #NikkyFinney #JenniferBartellBoykin #ColumbiaSC #HBCUArts #PoetsInConversation #LiveFromAllen #YouTubeLive If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
