Meet Dr. Shay Taylor Allen, a 2026 graduate of the Howard University College of Medicine whose story has inspired millions. Shay’s journey in healthcare didn’t start with a stethoscope—it started with a mop. At 18, she began working as a janitor at Yale New Haven Hospital, the same hospital where she was born. For ten years, she worked in environmental services, cleaning the very offices she would one day occupy as a physician. Driven by a personal mission to advocate for patients like her mother—whose medical concerns were once overlooked—Shay chose Howard University to find a community that felt like family. Now, after five years of hard work, setbacks, and unwavering determination, she is returning home to Yale New Haven Hospital for her residency in Anesthesiology. From cleaning the CEO’s office to becoming the doctor in the room, Dr. Taylor Allen is proof that you belong in every room you enter.
