UMES Campus Placemaking Walking Tour 2025

Students and the community at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) are leading a campus transformation initiative through placemaking - creating places where every Hawk feels they belong. This walking tour captures authentic student voices identifying what works on campus and what needs to change. Credits: Filmed, Edited, and Narrated by: Allen Potts Walking Tour Led by: Edwin Linderkamp (Marketing and Communications Manager, UMES Office of Student Experience) and Masarrah McDade (UMES Student, Student Government Association Junior Class Vice President) Tour Participants: UMES Staff: Beatrice Wright, Bianca Collins, Corrie Cotton, Leigh Ann Vreeland, and Ayanna Zenzele-Rushing. UMES Students: Jymere Roberts, Cynthia Miller, Augustina Lacoste, and Malini Davis What is Campus Placemaking? Campus placemaking is the intentional process of creating "people places" - spaces students want to use. After surveying 254 students, staff, and faculty using the Power of 10 mapping method, UMES students identified priority areas for transformation, from lighting and seating to landscaping and student gathering places. The Challenge: According to a national survey, 53% of college students nationwide report feeling disconnected. At UMES, students noticed this isolation at the dorms. Campus spaces feeling empty even during events, beautiful outdoor spaces going unused, and a campus that felt "frozen in time" rather than alive with activity. Student-Led Solutions: This walking tour shows students evaluating three key campus areas and proposing practical improvements. Students identified immediate safety needs like better lighting and long-term vision like equipment rental programs and outdoor amphitheaters. Key Findings: Students want more outdoor seating and tables (especially at Harford Hall), year-round colorful landscaping, better lighting for safety, scooter parking, photo-op locations with UMES letters, and most importantly - permission to use campus spaces for studying, picnicking, and gathering. Why This Matters: This isn't just about beautifying the UMES campus. It's about mental health, belonging, and student success. Creating places that the community loves. When students have multiple reasons to gather in the same public spaces, those places become the vibrant heart of campus life. The big goal: create 10 great places on campus where each offers 10+ activities. The Process: Students → Core Implementation Team → President's Cabinet. Students lead with ideas, staff provide operational expertise, and administrative leaders make final decisions. This model ensures improvements reflect what the community needs and desires.
