Dr. Terrell Strayhorn Named National Sanford Scholar

Virginia Union University Interim Dean of the Evelyn Reid Syphax School of Education Dr. Terrell Strayhorn has been named a Sanford Scholar, one of only 15 scholars selected nationwide to help shape the future of healthy and innovative learning. According to the Sanford Harmony website, the organization's newly established Strategic Advisory Group was created to ensure that the future of healthy learning is effective, innovative, and responsive to the evolving needs of educators, students, families, and communities. Strayhorn said the recognition reflects not only his work but also Virginia Union University's commitment to academic excellence and student success. "It is reflective of the university's commitment to having a world-class faculty who are leaders in their respective disciplines—not just in the classroom, although that's important—but who are thought leaders driving national conversations around student success." Strayhorn is also the only representative from a Historically Black College or University selected for the inaugural cohort. He said the distinction also highlights the enduring role Historically Black Colleges and Universities continue to play in advancing scholarship and leadership across higher education. "Historically Black Colleges and Universities have always been academic homes and incubators for scholars, intellectuals, and leaders who are driving important conversations like the ones I will help lead as a Sanford Scholar. To know that this leading scholar is unapologetically affiliated with and employed by one of the nation's 101 Historically Black Colleges and Universities is significant. It's meaningful." Strayhorn previously served as Virginia Union University's provost in 2020 before returning to the university in 2023. Throughout his career, he has published more than 200 peer-reviewed journal articles, policy reports, technical briefs and opinion pieces. His work has appeared in The Washington Post, The New York Times and The Chronicle of Higher Education, among other national publications. Looking ahead, Strayhorn said the honor inspires him to expand his research and public scholarship. "It's a recognition of the importance and impact of my research and scholarship. It motivates me to want to do more, more writing, more public scholarship, more blogs, more podcasts, and to broaden the net so that many more voices are included in that work. I'm looking forward to finding ways to engage that network of people." Strayhorn is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia, a master's degree from the University of Virginia School of Education, a master's degree in psychology from Indiana Tech, and a doctorate in higher education from Virginia Tech.
