North Carolina Central University’s community-based doula program is preparing individuals to provide emotional, physical and informational support to expectant mothers in rural North Carolina communities. In this WRAL News report, health reporter Grace Hayba examines the changing maternal care landscape across the state and introduces viewers to Rose Lewis, whose personal experience supporting her daughter inspired her to become a certified doula through NCCU’s program in Enfield. As rural communities face growing challenges accessing maternity care, NCCU’s program is helping prepare people who already live and work in these communities to walk alongside mothers and families throughout their pregnancy and childbirth journeys.
