Be among the first to experience the VUU Museum Galleries and celebrate this historic occasion. About the Honorees William A. & Pamela K. Royall Collectors, Philanthropists, and Champions of the Arts William A. “Bill” Royall, Jr. (1946–2020) and Pamela K. “Pam” Royall are distinguished art collectors and philanthropists whose commitment to contemporary art has enriched Richmond’s cultural landscape and expanded opportunities for emerging artists and arts educators. After combining their collecting efforts more than two decades ago, the Royalls built an extensive collection distinguished by artistic innovation, cultural diversity, and emerging talent. But their commitment to art always extended beyond collecting. They supported museums, educational institutions, artists, and community-based arts initiatives with the conviction that art can educate, connect, and transform communities. Together, Bill and Pam donated more than 100 works of modern and contemporary art to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and established a fund supporting the acquisition of 21st-century art, particularly works by emerging international artists. As co-chairs of the campaign to raise private funds for Virginia Commonwealth University’s Institute for Contemporary Art, they helped create an important new resource for contemporary art, education, and public engagement in Richmond. In 2009, they opened Try-me, a private arts space in Richmond’s arts district that they operated until 2020. It brought their collection into conversation with artists, educators, students, and the community. Through Try-me and their broader philanthropy, the Royalls have been particularly committed to championing emerging and mid-career artists, including numerous African American artists, and to supporting programs that encourage new forms of contemporary artistic expression.
