Outstanding Educators from Denmark Technical College Honored by SCTEA
Posted By: Kenyana Madison on July 25, 2008

Three outstanding educators at Denmark Technical College were recently honored at the 2008 South Carolina Technical Education Association’s annual conference in Myrtle Beach, SC. The event was attended by SCTEA members from all 16 state technical colleges, the State Board for Technical and Comprehensive Education, and guests.

Award recipients were chosen through votes cast by Denmark Technical College employees with balloting coordinated by DTC Director of Personnel, Mrs. Tonya Otts, a member of the SCTEA Executive Board. The educators selected for outstanding service and achievement are Mrs. Carolyn-Fennell McGay, Chief Academic Officer; Mr. Dale Davis, Barbering Instructor; and Mr. Jay Fields, Director of Career Planning & Placement.

Denmark Technical College’s award recipient for outstanding Administrator/Manager is Carolyn McGay. Mrs. McGay has been employed at Denmark Technical College for over 25 years, having served as Mathematics Instructor, Coordinator of Development Math, Dean of Transitional Studies, Dean of Arts and Sciences and Assistant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Mrs. McGay wrote the first Academic Advising Manual used at the College and has been involved in the implementation of two week grade reports and the effort-to-benefit process, two academic procedures designed to assist students academically in their studies at Denmark Tech. Mrs. McGay also designed and implemented the Basic Skills Assessment Program to assist high school students in completing the Exit Exam. In addition, she initiated the installation of one of the first networked computer labs in the Technical Education System in the area of Developmental Education.

Mrs. McGay actively visits high schools in the College’s service area of Bamberg, Barnwell and Allendale to promote Denmark Technical College by recruiting students to enroll in the dual credit programs, and encouraging them to enroll at the college as they graduate from high school. She has also been instrumental in working with high schools to articulate programs with Denmark Technical College.

Denmark Technical College’s award recipient for outstanding faculty member is Mr. Dale Davis. Mr. Davis has served at Denmark Technical College since 2004 as a Barbering Instructor. Mr. Davis, often referred to as Mr.

D by his students, has implemented new programs within DTC’s Barbering curriculum to retain student’s involvement and active classroom participation.

Mr. Davis began his education at DTC where he received his Diploma in Barbering. He has completed hair care programs at Dekalb Beauty College, Ultissima Beauty School and The Metropolitan School of Cosmetology in Atlanta, Georgia. He continues to develop professionally by receiving advance training through Dudley University in North Carolina.

Mr. Davis takes an active role in Denmark and surrounding communities. As a representative of the College, Mr. Davis speaks to various groups at elementary and high schools and community agencies concerning opportunities at Denmark Technical College. Mr. Davis serves as a member of various advisory and Tech Prep boards. In addition he serves as an advisor to the Barbering Club and the Men’s Esquire Club at Denmark Technical College.

Mr. Davis is a Master-Hair Care Specialist and a Board Certified Barbering Instructor. He is the owner and operator of Alexander’s Styling Center in Elloree S.C.

Denmark Technical College’s award recipient for outstanding staff member is Mr. Jay Fields, Director of Career Planning and Placement. As Director of Career Planning and Placement, Mr. Fields is responsible for all aspects of career planning for past, current, and future students. He is also responsible for high school career fairs, campus job fairs and various business workshops.

Mr. Fields hold a Bachelor of Science Degree in Counselor Education from South Carolina State University, a Master of Arts Degree in Counseling from Webster University, and he is currently working on his Ph.D. in Psychology from Capella University.

Mr. Fields serves as cohort counselor, lead advisor to the Men’s Esquire Club and member of the ADHOC Committee for Recruitment and Community Service at Denmark Technical College. He also assists with security initiatives and is a former Head Women’s Basketball Coach at DTC.

Mr. Fields was selected as an honorary member of DTC’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society in April 2007 and certified as a Global Career Development Facilitator. He is a member of the South Carolina Basketball Officials’ Association, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and serves as Lay Leader of Edisto Fork United Methodist Church in Orangeburg, S.C.
