Upside to Slavery? Posted on 08-20-2004
CAN Dancer

I was chillin before class one day and I made a comment about slavery. Then this white guy, someones who fairly intellegent but still very ignorant, stepped in and asked me why black people are so worked up about slavery. He said: It happened in the past and theres nothing we can do about it so we should just move on. Then he said that we should be thankful for slavery because living in North America is so much better than living in Africa right now (he used the example between Canada and SIerra Leone). If it wasnt for slavery half of us would be **** from fighting in wars as child soldiers or just victims or wars and the rest of us would be living in extreme poverty and dying from malnourishment or HIV/****. I said: the reason why Africa is in such turmoil these days is because of the colonisation by Europeans and the fact that slavery had a huge negative impact on the continent because so many villages were devastated. Personally, I was really offended but do u think he has a point? Should we be thankful that slavery brought us here? Just wondering what you guys think of this.

One reason I can't stand white people, they're always bound to say some stupid ****like that. The majority of African countries aren't in a war, less then 2% of all Africans have ****,and not all Africans are living in poverty, there are big cities in Africa with a middle and upper class just like anywhere else but a lot of the poverty and political turmoil in Africa is due to colonialism, the **** trade, neocolonalism and imperialism. There is an upside from slavery, but it was White America who benefited, with all the contributions Black Americans have made to the US.

i agree with your point CAN, more than i agree with the white dude's. i have heard that argument before and i never thought it was a legitimate one. if blacks and whites were more balanced in terms of where they live, education, jobs, etc., then i could maybe see his point. but for our ancestors to live through slavery, the civil rights movement, etc., and then for us to live in the twisted times we live in now, i don't see the upside.

yeah, you did make a good point, since we are in this place the only good thing i can say is that our ancestors built this country and that we got rights for us that started the right's movements and that we had our own education systems: reason for this site and other like it. and I saw that the white people made the disease HIV/**** to go against our biological systems to get rid of us. I say that we educate ourselves and others of our history and try to move forward.

oh HAIIIILLLLLLL naw. First of all, when Africans fought amongst eachother, there was never the level of massacre as was after Europeans brought firearms to Africa and made them turn against themselves even more by feeding their greed with the gold/**** trade. Second of all, the mantra of the black african villiage was to take care of yourself to insure success, but assist those who are unsuccessful. There WAS no EXTREME poverty in Africa before European involvement because most tribes were self-sufficient, and those that weren't had developed complex intertribal/international trading routes. and FINALLY, HIV/**** may have never developed. The only reason Africa has such widespread **** epidemics is that the mores of African society have been warped by European invasion, to the point where they many do not care anymore, and the one that do have not the funds to treat themselves. Had Europe never fukked with Africa, **** would not exist.

No. Had there never been **** labor in America, it would not have developed as quickly as it did, seeing as how by 1660, slavery was a fixed, integral part of American socioeconomics. White people could not afford to buy indentured servants to work for them for seven years only to have to get more, nor were they wealthy enough to work their own fields. Most americans of European descent are of peasant stock: were they of the **** class of Europe, and therefore wealthy, they would have had no reason to come over here. Their wealth came PRIMARILY through the labor of their overworked and unpaid slaved. No slaves =no interior roadsystems, no WHITEHOUSE, no cotton=no textile=no $$; no corn, no wheat, no potatoes=no food=yo **** is **** come november; no slaves=no leather=yo **** cain't walk cuz yo busted **** shoeless feet hurt. no slaves=no money=no iron=no railroads=no trains=no western development=mexico and france woulda MERKED yo ****!

That is a pure example that ignorance still exists among white people today...before the white man touched african soil we were kings and queens... and peasants and as a matter of fact... alot of us (blk ppl) are **** from fighting in THEIR wars... america starts a war wheneva it feels like it....the only reason why N. American is better than Africa right now is because we built America... this is our country.. as well as Africa...and everyone knows that HIV/**** is a white mans disease.... jus like they **** all the Native Americans with their diseases and colds... HIV/****... is meant for the Africans... get my drift?

We really don't know what the world would be like if slavery hadn't been a part of our history. There is no doubt that today even the poorest Americans are better off than many people in certain areas of Africa. That is not acknowledging the fact that... 1. a non-colonized Africa would have most likely emerged very differently without foreign involvement 2. the prosperity we enjoy today was paid for by sacrifices made earlier in history. The civil wars and relatively unstable economies in Africa are the direct aftereffects of years of foreign rule. Nations such as Ghana which were not ruled as European colonies enjoy modern economies and living standards comparable to many European countries. I agree that we are in a better living situation as Americans than many Africans, however a price was paid for it by others. It is impossible to determine exactly what the world would be like without slavery, I don't think we should focus on analyzing it. Instead we need to focus on building a solid American economy. Holla!

I've heard this arguement a lot of times, and I definitely think we could have been better off if we stayed in Africa and it hadn't been colonized. At the same time, this is one of those "what if" arguements that is impossible to really judge and predict how the different continents would have progressed. It's just like sayin "if Magic had never got HIV, what would the Lakers have done?" "if Pac never got shot, what would rap be like?" there is a lot of different possibilities. I definitely don't think that America would have been at the level it is now without us here. Not only from what we did during slavery, but because of all of our inventions and our strong cultural influence that we had in America. Imagine if we could have done some similar things in Africa.
