They are trying to draft women Posted on 10-08-2004
Ms. Sunshine

I don't know if this has been up for discussion because I haven't been on the site as much as I used to. I thought this would be good to share. Greetings! MM: Mandatory U.S. Military Draft Please take the time to read this e-mail. It is in reference to a new bill that the U.S. House and Senate is attempting to pass that would make it mandatory for men and WOMEN (ages 18-26) to serve in the army starting June 15, 2005. I went to the website and it is a legitimate bill. Information is power. There is pending legislation in the house and senate (companion bills: S89 and HR 163) which will time the program's initiation so the draft can begin as early as spring, 2005, just after the 2004 presidential election. The administration is quietly trying to get these bills passed now, while the public's attention is on the elections. This plan, among other things, eliminates higher education as a shelter and includes women in the draft. Also, crossing into Canada has already been made very difficult. And let your children know - - it's their future, and they can be a powerful voice for change! This legislation is called HR 163 and can be found in detail at this website thomas.loc.gov Just enter in "HR 163" and click search and will bring up the bill for you to read. It is less than two pages long. If this bill passes, it will include all men and ALL WOMEN from ages 18 - 26 in a draft for military action. In addition, college will no longer be an option for avoiding the draft and they will be signing an agreement with Canada which will no longer permit anyone attempting to dodge the draft to stay within it's borders. This bill also includes the extention of military service for all those that are currently active. If you go to the select service web site and read their 2004 FYI Goals you will see that the reasoning for this is to increase the size of the military in case of ****. This is a critical piece of legislation, as this will effect our undergraduates, our children and our grandchildren. Please take the time to write your congressman and let them know how you feel about this legislation. [www.house.gov] or [www.senate.gov] Why isn't the media covering this important story? After all, the $28 million for the draft has been added to the 2004 selective service system budget to prepare for a military draft that could start as early as June 15, 2005. Selective service must report to Bush [the likely winner] on March 31, 2005 that the system, which has lain dormant for decades, is ready for activation. Please see ww w.sss.gov/perfplan_fy2004.html to view the Selective Service System annual performance plan, fiscal year 2004. The pentagon has quietly begun a public campaign to fill all 10,350 draft board positions and 11,070 appeals board slots nationwide. Though this is an unpopular election year topic, military experts and influential members of congress are suggesting that if Rumsfeld's prediction of a "long, hard slog" in Iraq and Afghanistan (and permanent state of war on ****) proves accurate, the U.S. may have no choice but to draft. www.hslda.org/legislation/national/20 03/s89/default.asp entitled the Universal National service Act of 2003, "to provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons (age 18-26) in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes." These active bills currently sit in the committee on armed services. Dodging the draft will be more difficult than those from the Vietnam era. College and Canada will not be options. In December, 2001, Canada and the U.S. signed a "smart border declaration," which could be used to keep would-be draft dodgers in. Signed by Canada's minister of foreign affairs, John Manley, and U.S. Homeland Security director, Tom Ridge, the declaration involves a 30 point plan which implements, among other things, a "pre-clearance agreement" of people entering and departing each country. Reforms aimed at making the draft more equitable along gender and class lines also eliminates higher education as a shelter. Underclassmen would only be able to postpone service until the end of their current semester. Seniors would have until the end of the academic year.

SMH  Bush is not the one coming up with this, the senate and the house of representatives are. The people in the house of representatives and senate, who OUR STATES votes for, are coming up with these laws. Seriously, I am tired of people blaming every single thing that happends in government on Bush. Most things that come to pass Bush doesn't come up with, the people we put in the house of representatives and senate came up with these SMH

If you want to blame someone you are going to have to take it back a little further than Bin Laden. I'm thinking more along the lines of the elder Bush. If it weren't for him training Bin Laden and the rest of Al Qaida they wouldn't be capable of some of the things that are going on right now, and if Bush wouldn't have acted like he was on Bin Laden's side then left them high and dry Bin Laden wouldn't have had a reason to hate America as much as he does. Oh and legislation also deals alot wit the president. If he signs the bill, then it comes into effect. He has the right to veto. Bush bete veto it too if this piece of legislation makes it all the way to his desk. It would be **** wrong of him to try and make young adults go to war when he ran away from it himself  .

The fact that there is a bill on the table to institute a draft is true. There is also one to require military service for all Americans when they reach 18yrs. old (as in Germany and Israel.) This bill was voted down in the House on Tuesday, 402-2. They were created by a Democratic senator who was protesting the war in Iraq; the logic being that it will bring attention to the fact that the majority of Congressmen who support the war would oppose sending their loved ones into harm's way. So don't pack your bags. More information about Selective Service: Just FYI... College is already no longer an option for avoiding the draft. The Selective Service Act of 1977 allows college students to postpone until the end of the semester, after which they must report for duty. Women cannot be drafted under current law, which was challenged in 1981 and upheld by the Supreme Court. Every now and then, I see the issue of draft for war in Iraq pop up, so I'm letting everyone know not to worry about it. Holla!
