Alrighty, I just joined here so please don't shoot my head off if someone has already asked a question of similar nature. But, what made you really want to go to a HBCU? I come from an all white stuck-up white people town, where I have gone to an all white school my entire life. At first I really wanted to go to an HBCU- Spelman or Hampton, but now so many people have told me I wouldn't get anything out of it but, ignorance and always be hated on. So, my question to you is, is life at a HBCU really like this and what are your thoughts.
Thanks
Well let me be one of the first to welcome you...... I am a student at NORFOLK STATE UNIVERSITY in Norfolk, VA. I am from NY where there aren't many if any HBCU's. I was a bit septical at first because I initially wanted to go to a predominatly white school. WELL I'm a junior now and I don't regret my choice in the least. Yeah the majority of folks here a black, but we all come from different places... for instance my roommate is from Kansas City, Missouri. Cultures are the biggest things you will have to deal with attending a HBCU.. not RACISM. I find a lot of comfort here because I don't have to constantly look over my shoulder. This is a learning and empowering oppourtunity that I would not give up for the world. I urge every african-american;black to try to attend a HBCU. All the negative comments come from people that are not really happy with their decisions. But I was tell everyone that I come across that is looking to further their education...
1) make the decision for yourself.. it is your four years no on else's.
2) GET INVOLVED.. it will be boring (not just at a HBCU) if you don't partake in the activites on campus.. plus you pay for it
3) Best Of Luck in finding a school right for you !!!!!
I am a student at Hampton U. To tell you the truth I decided to go to the school because it was near the water and had a good academic reputation. I came from an mixed environment with Hispanics, Whites, Blacks, Asians and everything in between. There is a lot of ignorance and racism that is being taught at HBCU's across the nation, but I learned to deal with it by just surrounding myself with the right people, not attending certain events when they dehumanized and have racist views about other people. There are good things that they teach here too and hearing people that have come to speak to us have been really inspiring. Like the girl from NSU said it is somewhat diverse since people are from all over. Learning how to deal with certain people and ignorant views held by many black people was a very challenging experience. There are a lot of events that go on and most people learn that campus life is what you make of it.
i can only speak for the school that i am goin' 2 go 2 (HAMPTON) and the impression it made on me
2 me Hampton seemed 2 be focus on developing leaders and the academics seemed equal to most other colleges
coming from a white school (7-10th grade) 2 a black high school(11-12(now)) i could tell you that the biggest change has been organization and not funding but how funding is used aka organization
if that bothers you then i don't suggest goin 2 an hbcu because from on here and with my friends (my school stuff has been goin smoothly) it seems the poor organization will only continue
hmm...as far as people i believe it will also be like my switch in hs where u still have the same type of ppl i.e. the ones who wanna be white..the gangsters..preps..wannabe thugs..divas..etc. etc. but with the larger group of blacks it is much easier to find the right stitch for yourself (lol just like college hill...which yea i realize it sux now BUT i'll prolly continue 2 watch out of habit)
anyway maybe u should visit a couple and find out ... i think that is what was best for me
on that note i gotta say HAMPTON's hs day is on point they do that better than most schools i've seen because u actually see people outside whereas other schools i've been too were relatively barren...and it may just be hampton but they had mad fine girls everywhere and ppl weren't being all that ghetto wit the bass or anything..(i'm a stop cuz i'm rambling and i can't focus cuz i'm talking)
Aww, thanks you guys, your replies were really informative. If I did decide to go to a hbcu Hampton would be my first choice and Howard second. The only thing I don't like about Hampton is it seems like they treat you as if you are in hs with 11pm curfew, dress code etc.. On the other hand, my entire family lives in Va. I have seen Spelman's campus since I live in Ga, and was very dissapointed . Thanks for the comments

You should come check us out, if you get the chance. Don't sweat curfew because it's only for the first few weeks that you're here. The fact that you have family in the area should definitely come in handy, especially for a homecooked meal or a place to chill for the weekend. If you want more info, let me know. Holla!
I want to take tours, but my mom won't let me. Don't ask... So, I'm going to just apply to a whole bunch of schools, and see who offers the most money.
