This topic is to address issues and concerns in black colleges and communities. It's all good to joke around and have fun, but we really need to address some issues and concerns. There is a srious problem inour black institution closing or not haveing acurate funding. Also, the mindset of the students aren't the same. It seems like we are going backward instead of forward. Please, lets talking about some problems and some solutions to those problems. It all starts with us, the young and the black. We have the power to change things if we all get on one page, or at least the same chapter.........
FOR GOD, FOR CENTRAL, FOR STATE...
CENTRAL STATE UNIVERSITY
MARAUDERS
Its funny that I came across this topic, because I was at work on Friday and one of my supervisors and I were talking about the same thing. The whole spirit of HBCU's is not the same anymore. Or at least its not what I expected coming to an HBCU. It saddens me that alot of students at these HBCU's really don't care, or they are not enthusiastic about the history of HBCU's and the purpose of them being here. If we as a people don't take care of what we have, we will having nothing to take care of in the future. Somebody else will do it for us. I don't want to see any more HBCU going down the drain, it would be such a shame if any more do. Somehting needs to be done, and I'm willing to help do it. But I can't do it alone.
I recently did a research paper on HBCUs
The government definately give more money to PWIs and the alumni of PWIs also donate large amounts to their schools.
I found out that a lot of the problems that HBCUs face has to do with the lack of funding and administration problems.
Its so bad that most HBCUs are force to borrow PWIs logos/mascots but unfortunately the only HBCU that had success with it is NCAT....hopefully it will get better in the future or HBCUs........I can go on and on about what I found out when I did my research but that would take all day.....
I agree that there has been a lack of spirit that use to reign in black universities. I remember when I first wanted to go to an HBCU when I saw the excitment my college had on it's campus bakc in the day. Well, all we can do is try to get that spirit back and ask our admissions office to stop accepting trash, if you know what i mean
DJ Trench:
I'm feelin' your last remark about "not letting in trash"! We were just having the same discussion at FISK about how a lot of the current students don't have the passion, the commitment, the home-training, etc. We've thought about suggesting to the admissions office that they stop accepting people that don't want to aspire to better things, deeper thoughts, notions of service, etc. Have you guys tried talking to admissions? If so, what did they say?
If someone made a negative remark about your school would you feel offened? I want to know because someone said something to me about my school and I was heated. Was I wrong for having school pride, and feeling offened?
You are all right, I think that it starts firstly with firing the people who do not want to be there...the people who just sit and talk all day about absolutly nothing but get mad because they have to do work because you show up. Secondly, we need to try to change the mindset of some of the people here. I personally have had too many negative situations to occur at my HBCU. The only thing that keeps me coming back is the professors and my friends. How about having telethon or something to raise funds for our HBCUs. I think that some HBCUs put on a front as if they have money, but once you go and attend, you see the real picture. WE NEED MORE MONEY
I think that the lack of money is bad. And a lot of these dorms @ HBCU's are horrible, including the school I am at now. If not horrible they need upgrading. Just my opinion. Hollaz yall
I agree with all of you guys. Students nowadays don't appreciate the HBCU's. They start stuff for no reason at all without thinking how it will effect the school. We're always complaining about the little things. I know here at Pv, things were nothing like what it is today. Everybody got along with everybody and if you didn't, then you needed to work out your differences. There were no personal restrooms and there was no cable and dorms were four stories tall with no elavators. Back then, they even had curfews!!! So look at where we are now. We have fully furnished apartments with some that have full size beds like the ones I stay in. We go and come as we please all day long. But of course, we still complain. Most of the time, that's where all the money goes, into making the campus look better and not actually be better.
