**Someone will move my thread even though I INTENDED for it to be in the YARD**
It's amazing how far a person would go just to become popular at a particular college and it's even crazier at what people DO to try to stay at the top!!
How else would one explain why people go through a rigorous 6+ week process just to join an organization? Brother Hood, sisterhood? Maybe for some but the majority is seeking popularity.
Just yesterday at Tips school, SIUC, I witnessed a probate show. The "alphas", kids that claim to be men, broke out into a brawl with members of Beta Phi pi and several members of the football team.
Why else would an Alpha yell out to a group of people that they are a bunch of b*tches and won't do sh*t to them?? What did he have to gain from that??
R.E.S.P.E.C.T...
Should I mention that he got his **** whooped??
Even before the damn probate got started. Active member's pf the Frat wanted to show the crowd that they do in fact haze by throwing the pledges around and roughing them up. Guess what happed...
One of the pledges severely turned his ankle and I overheard that he may broke it. Either way he had to be carried away. Due to the injury.
He among the rest of their frat wanted to show how "they are popular" "rough", "tough" and "how no one on campus could f*ck with them"...
Is that what the sole purpose of being in an Org. is about?
Popularity? To push people down while you think you're in the "In crowd"??
At times I reevaluate this whole "GreeK" thing. I'm not saying everyone should be included but most people that pledge, more so for men, are insecure with themselves.
Why else would they try sooo damn hard to prove to the student body that they are the best on campus? You know,
"Look how DEEP we are"
"Hey look at us!! We throw the best Parties"
"We will even stroll all night and not even think about dancing with the ladies just to show our pride..."
-I found it funny that two Ques strolled all night last night ignoring all the beautiful women in the club just to dance with each other...Sorry but lol
"F*ck the Alphas..How are ya'll gonna start with 5 and end with 5..Ya'll a bunch of 'Paper B*tches'.."
- From an Outraged member of Iota Phi Theta(Not me)..He was upset at the fact the Alphas were popular but weren't REAL..Or Real like the Iotas because they infact "haze"...
This whole "greek" thing is out of control. This was not the purpose founders of each Org intended on..
Sometimes..I dont want to be apart of it anymore...
like i said before, frat and sororities are just something i don't get...i mean ain't i already in some club? i'm a republican...smh i just reallly don't get them or understand them...WHAT IS THE FREAKING POINT??? and i hate it when somebody comes into my estbablishment or church or whatever and is like "yeah, i was a member of phi beta kappa kappa....i'm like...."dude, i don't even know what that means...and am i suppose to care?" and then like when you talk to highschoolers n stuff on break, they sit there and ask you "hey, did you join a frat?"
i'm just like :???:
why don't they just find a bunch of buddies to hang out with man...i just don't get them...
yeah so i guess it's a part of college life that i dunno i just don't pay attentioon to....and then black peoiple take it to another level...like it's suppose to be some gang or something...smh...8-) (nessa)
I'm not a member of a GLO, but from what I've observed I don't believe that all member of these organizations are stuck on being popular I think its the people who are NOT in the organizations who EXPECT these members to be popular and uphold a certain reputation.
For the most part when a non-greek rates GLO as far as "who is the best on campus" they will autmatically think of the amount of paties, or social activites they do, they won't say "XYZ doesn't throw too many parties but they are commited to their weekly community service efforts." So maybe its not the greeks who are caught up on this false idea of popularity maybe its the students who are on the outside looking in wishing or just hating that these members are somewhere that they have yet to reach.
I also think that the non-greeks misinterpretation of GLO amplifies this "popularity contest view," most people do not wish to go through a process just so they can wear the colors and have instant popularity(although some do just that), for the most part its a deep connection to the organization and its principles that motivate one's decision to pursue and organization. A commited member attends meetings, offers insight, ideas, set up programs for students on campus, as well community service, attend conferences, and are a leading example in their community as well as on campus, do you HONESTLY think that people will saccrifice so much of their free time with these activities which can be extremelystressul, and time consuming just so everyone can know their name? ^^^This girl is speaking some wisdom right dere.
I think it goes both ways. Alot of times, people have bigheads after going greek because they are weakminded individuals who let the compliments and praises of others pump them up. I've seen it happen on this campus just within the last week. I think it's sad, but i can see how it can happen. I've had my own friends tell me "wow...i'm friends with a greek person. I feel special." Everywhere u go u get love or recognition. People no longer see u as Kenya Morris, but as "that Zeta". People look at u differently & in a sense put u on a pedastal. I'm not giving them an excuse, but those who aren't used to that treatment, or those who are easily influenced, can get corrupted by that.
Cosign on what Kenya said... A lot of **** have gotten brand new, and that just means that they were weak to begin with.. IMO, if you were wack b4 you crossed you'll still be wack after, I just might respect your struggle a bit more.
And for the original poster, maybe your views are being limited to the sights of your campus. Think of BGLO members at PWIs, where people couldn't tell you what Alpha Kappa Alpha was, let alone Tri-Delta. They were called, and in many situations, no one knows who they are except for the people in the Departmetn of Student Activities. If people go through MIP for popularity, then they are going in for the wrong reasons, and hopefully they will come out with more insight then they had to begin with.
Also remember that popularity can come from the fact that they are visible for doing good things on campus: for example, organization of the year for community service, Student government, etc. I was once told to never judge an organization by its individual campus, but the collective. Perhaps this is the case in your observations.
I agree with on certain points but I also believe that some people join orginazations for all the good reasons the name and the fame just come with the territory. Some can adapt better than others. but that's life and there is a good and bad to everything so take it for what it is because that's the way it's gonna be like or not.
like ive wanted to be greek, but the thing that scares me the most is the thing that was described above, and also my grandparents belonged to eastern star and mason...yeah not greek but still a secretive organization, and it seemed back then things were about helping the black community and all.....and i really want to follow my grandparents footsteps since they did get themselves involved in SO Much stuff to help out.....but then again i dont want to be associated with an org known only by it's colors and calls and parties....but what it has done to help out like it was founded to do...but over the next few months, i guess its basically me deciding if going greek...if it's too late to change the situation or whether i should join an org I want to try to help make things better and make my grandparents proud..
