I don't know if yall noticed the link in my sig but it's a website giving more information about this celebration. I also did a Juneteenth post last year but it's in the Graveyard and since nobody goes there I decided to start another one education the many of "us" who aren't aware of this holiday and what it commerates. Juneteenth is an African-American celebration on June 19, the day in 1865 that news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached slaves in Galveston, Texas—two years after it was issued. That means that slaves in Texas were still slaves for two whole years, unaware that they were free. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the end of slavery in the United States. The proclamation was read on the docks of Galveston by Union general Gordon Granger and news quickly spread throughout the state, sparking impromptu celebrations which were continued on the June 19th anniversary. By the end of the twentieth century, Juneteenth celebrations had become popular outside of Texas, and are now held annually in many different locations across the United States and throughout the world. I'll have pics from the festival I'll be attending tommorrow and from a parade. If any of you have pics post them as well.

My city's having its Juneteenth celebration coming up this Saturday with about 20 different national artists including Omarion, P Dub, Mike Jones, Gucci Man, Tyra, and Marques Houston. It's supposed to be very big, because all of the discount tickets have been sold out.

Texas started it but it's a holiday that people of many of a lot of states such as Louisiana, Chicago, Arkansas, Ohio, etc because people of those states may have Texan relatives or their ancestors migrated to different states back then and brought along the celebrations. It's basically a celebration of the complete end of slavery.
