Reparations Anyone?? Posted on 06-20-2005
LadyJag7

I know we've discussed this topic a couple times, but having seen it discussed in the news more and more recently I wanted to see what you all thought about it. Several companies, including Wachovia and JP Morgan, have recently owned up to their active roles in slavery and have issued apologies. Do you think African Americans/people of African decent should receive reparations for slavery/lynchings? If you do, what form do you think reparations should come in? And if you don't think they should get reparations, why is that? I'll be back with my thoughts later...

i think for the mere reason that our ancestors practically BUILT this country for nothing but asswhoopings and the spit of their antagonizers, we should be compensated. they robbed us of nearly 450 years of our culture and dammit i want them back- but form of compensation, i feel as though land or money in the form of scholarships or something would be somewhat sufficient seeing as how nothing can change what they put our ancestors through. but for SOME reason, i feel we'll more than likely get screwed AGAIN... :???:

I feel it would be appropriate for blacks to receive reparations in the form of rebuilding our inner city communities and schools. If reparations were to happen and whatever funds were available should be used solely to rebuild and repair. I dont think no black person should receive reparations in the form of any check or monies going into our pocket.

I agree w/ this logic. I think that if reparations were to be given, the best thing that could be given to our people is funds to improve our educational systems and quality of life. Too many of us live in subpar housing and not all youth can dream of attending a college(or hell, finishing high school for that matter).Perhapsif the government dispersed money in a smart way we could have a fighting chance of having the bright future they tried so hard to rob us of. Peace&Blessings.....

I agree with this, or it could be given in the form of scholarships (college scholarships or even just for blacks to attend better schools, kinda like the voucher system here in Cleveland and Milwaukee). I don't think a check going out to each and every black person would be beneficial because it would be like throwing money down the toilet.

I agree that, in principal, blacks (those who can trace their lineage back to slavery in this country) should receive reparations in some form. I do not think that a monetary value is sufficient because what sum can you place on the suffering of so many people. I think that something much more substantial should be given such as guaranteed higher education as well as my d*mn 40 acres, drug rehab for those who need it and a more proactive criminal rehabilitation program. Even though Dave Chapelle is just comedy, I could guarantee that a significant portion of the population would blow reparations no matter what the sum would be and every penny would again be in the hands of those companies that benefitted from slavery. Also, I wouldn't try to rebuild inner cities. Doing so in many places means just fixing it up for the whites to move back in. When you look at many major cities like NY, DC, Philly, and Chicago, the face of those cities is changing rapidly and blacks wouldn't benefit from rebuilding there. Reparations is a difficult subject because there are so many challenges to making reparations truly meaningful as well as correcting a wrong that has grown increasingly worse. Just my '06 cents.

Giving reparations to us is like White people admitting to the mistreatment of Blacks over the years and they really don't want to do that. These people think racism doesn't exist.
