TORONTO AP - A contentious idea to curb gun **** in Toronto by allowing police to randomly stop young black men was rejected Wednesday by officials in Canada's largest city, which has seen an upsurge in homicides in recent months.
City councilor Michael Thompson said earlier this week that the recent flurry of shootings demands a drastic response.
"I'd like to see that support be provided to police where they would pull over young black men in their problem communities to ask questions to determine whether or not those young black men are armed, carrying weapons," said Thompson, who is black.
There have been 31 gun-related deaths in Toronto among the 45 homicides in the city this year, many of them believed to be by gang members. The gun deaths have outraged the city.
Mayor David Miller's office dismissed Thompson's proposal as racial profiling.
"The mayor condemns and rejects this idea outright," said Brad Ross, a spokesman for Miller. "Community policing is about building trust and relationships. Furthermore, it is not a crime in this city to be a young black man."
He said Miller's strategy is to bolster police resources, strengthen provincial gun laws and improve opportunities for young people.
"Law and order, guns off the street, criminals in jail and working with young people in the community so that they don't turn to the gang culture," are solutions, he said.
In another effort to reduce **** in the city, Police Chief Bill Blair announced Monday he would reassign 100 officers to uniform duty. Fifty officers were redeployed to a problem area in the northwest section of the city earlier this month.
Thompson had said he only wants to see his proposal enacted as a temporary measure.
"It's not about racism; it's not about profiling," insisted Thompson.
"It is that the police now have got to take measures - drastic measures in cases - to deal with the problems that are happening in these problem areas."

Hos is giving Police the ability to randomly stop and earch BLack men NOT racial profiling!?! Dumb ****. I mean, don't they already have that ability to do that to people they deem suspicious? Dude prolly would've been better off just keeping his mouth shut. Fuggin ****.
