This is kind of based on a late-night/early-morning discussion that I was having with a friend of mine.
Do you think that color discrimination is still prevalent in the African-American community? If so, what do you think it says about how we view ourselves and the world around us?
i definitely do.. i hear boys all the time talking about how they only like a certain skin tone of black girl. its like in that antwone fisher movie,when he was talking about which kids would get adopted first: the light skin girls, then the light skin boys, then the dark skin girls, then the dark skin boys. why? its ridiculous how brainwashed we are into thinking "white is right". we can't ever hope to gain advancement & respect as a community if we continue to be so divided. Black is beautiful. period.

I hear guys and females talk about what type of skin tone that they would only date. It is interesting that I've heard one guy, that was really high yellow, state that he was only attracted to light skinned girls. Which didn't make sense to me because most people that are light skinned tend to like darker skinned individuals. I tried to change his opinion by saying that there are a lot of beautiful dark skinned girls, but he wasn't trying to hear that. I've heard some black women talk about what type of shade of a brother that they would only date. So yeah, to answer the question of this thread black people are still obsessed with color.
It stems from slavery when the white master separated the dark skinned slaves from light skinned slaves, and it has been passed down from generations that the closer to white the better. It's not only the light skinned people that are prejudice, there are some dark skinned individuals that are prejudiced against lighter skinned individuals. I've seen some darker skinned girls get jealous of a lighter skin girl and make rude comments like, "Oh, she think she's pretty or she thinks she's better than someone." In order for people to overcome this inner racism or inferiority, they must come to terms of who they are. Be thankful for God's creation and love what God made and quit resenting his creation. God loves us all whether he created you dark or light, he loves all of his creations.

yes color consciousness has plagued the African American race for years upon years... since the time of slavery the light skinned black was seemed (at least to their darkskinned counterparts to be in a upper esilion of folks... and that continues today..some Darksinned blacks tend to believe that Light skinned blacks have it better... that life is gr8 and its gravy.. but let me tell you if the **** ran through my small town of darien and seen me and a lightskinned freind... guess who they would pick up.... BOTH OF US... we all black and we get did in equally....
I personally think that as far as picking a mate... color discrimination isnt as big a role as we believe. (and since DJ is being blunt guess i will too...)
People as a whole more commonly find darker thing to be more unattractive. I mean lighter pets over darker pets, its just darkness kinda symbolizes grimness...
It like saying there is such thing as weight discrimination, you know because **** masters made fat blacks work and skinny ones relax that now we as a black nation prefer a skinny mate...
no, its just what the majority believe to be attractive...
So when i see a light skinned female i dont get at her because of what some **** master did some odd years ago, but because its just more attractive to me...

well to be honest... i man donsent say to him self.....Oh yea when i get her pregnant shes gonna have a smooth pregnancy..... big **** is bigbootie.. big hips is big hips... isnt it a fact that big hiped women have easier pregnancy? but i digress. im not dissin but i like hips... its jus a trurn on not a preconcived notion. but u r rite slavementality does still exist...... jus a bad example... still got love fa ya mia!!! (although this is my first run in wit cha lol)
Sooooooo i guess white people were once slaves too' and their master would oppress the pale ones and had more respect and decency towards the tanner slaves???... No, they didnt. However we see them all trying to get that perfect tan that evryones seems to think is bueatiful. Not because of slavery, or incarcirated thinking but because that is just what people think to be attractive in this era... and the same concept is prevalent in this situation. Some females like dark guys more like lighter ones but either way its because of what they or the majority/media finds attractive...Thats my take for those who are open minded enough to recieve it...
and i have had plenty of run ins with wide hip and phatty havin women and NEVER have i or any my ppls thought, wow she probaly would have a less complicated labor... I understand tha **** mentality thing but we give it too much credit...
i think we have the capacity to be indepent thinkers in our take on ''attractive'' these days...
Totally cosigns. I'ma just put it out there that the color preference was around long before slavery, during the pre-colonial era in Africa. That's why I keep insisting it's our own personal perspective of beauty and how that continues to have an impact on how we identify ourselves. I also called it f*cked up because we'll do anything to achieve that 'perfect look' without any thought to how it will affect our health. Not to mention the way we treat our own who do not and refuse to try to achieve our varying perception of beauty.
here i reintroduce the term "ingrained". it refers to subconscious, preconceived notions, NOT conscious thought processes. and as for what i said about hips, that goes all the way back to the theory of 'natural selection'. certain body types, and apparently skin tones, are more attractive to potential mates because of their capacity to reproduce a certain type of offspring. i figured that would be common knowledge..but maybe we haven't all had biology?
