If you want to stand out apply early. And in your essay, perhaps you want to choose the option where you can write your own essay and describe attributes about yourself and what makes you stand out, anything that you may have overcome. Describe why you want to go to Spelman. What makes Spelman stand out versus other schools to you, but don't beat down the other schools, etc.

You should call the admissions office for clarification. I was just as eager as you to apply this time last year but when Ms. Alexis Hudson, the admissions counselor, visited my city she told me to wait a little while before applying because they were about to change the essay question. I also recommend that you start early with getting your recommendations, make sure you get a copy of your high school transcript, get a copy of any any college transcript(s), and that you try to do some community service this summer. Apply Early Action (Non-binding) or Early Decision (if you are absolutely sure that Spelman is your first choice and this is binding) so that you can get an answer early. Try to visit the campus and talk to the admissions staff. It would also benefit you if you were to spend some time getting to know your high school counselor(s) because you will need their reccomendation(s) and they may also point you in the direction of scholarship money (which should come in handy). Lastly, keep your grades up, pray hard, and don't get discouraged! Spelman wants intelligent, mature, goal-oriented, and well-rounded young women. If this describes you than you are on the right track. Hopefully I'll see you during Spelbound 2009! -Ariel M. Spelman c/o 2012

cool, thanks for the advice. i actually called Spelman 2day and asked them to send me an application package so i believe its the updated 1.lol who knows. ive also accumulated about if not more than 270 hours of community service. i worked with students at an elementary school for 2 years and now I'm apart of this program called TASA (Teens Against the Spread of ****) and what we do is basically educated DC youth about health related issues through theater and other aspects of the Arts. i attend a prestigious college prep high school in Washington DC so our grading scale is different from all the other schools. for instance, a 95-100 is an A, 94-88 is a B, 87-79 is a C, 79-69 is a D, and anything below is an F. as of my 9th and 10th grade year, my GPA is a 3.0 ,however ive been making 4.0s throughout the 11th grade so my overall GPA is subject to rise to at least a 3.3. im also a candidate for the international baccalaureate (IB) program which shows that im taking challenging courses and ive been involved in several extracurricular activities but no sports.=[ . the reason i typed all that, lol, was to see whether or not i have a chance at getting in. what do you think?

If you apply through the common app (commonapp.org) you can choose your own essay. The common app asks for a essay and then a little short response on your extracurriculars. I used the commonapp to apply Early Notification.

I was an IB student (full IB) and its a great program but I also took a few Dual Enrollment classes at a local community college so that I could have some guaranteed credits. My school system allows its high school students to do this free of charge but if you have the chance to and the time to (don't go overboard I was in marching band and was Student Council Vice President among other things so I only took two classes total over 2 semesters in the evening) you should (if you can) because it shows that you can not only college prep. courses (IB, AP...) but the college atmosphere as well while getting college credit. Know your limits because I got a little over excited (I participated maybe a little too much) during my senior year so I had to let a few things go to keep my sanity. My advice to you is no matter what you do or don't do, DO NOT GET SENIORITIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

giirrl!! this is what happened 2 me. i applied for this program called HISCIP.it allows be to take classes at a college or university in dc or md for credits.i filled out my application and everything for Georgetown and there was a possible 16 credits i believe. i worked so **** that application 2.then 1 day my counselor calls me down and tells me my IB coordinator wont allow any IB students 2 do the program b/c it would b too much on us b/c we would not only have 2 fulfill the requirements of IB we would also have 2 fulfill the requirements of the university. i was upset but there was nothing i could do. the only think i can really try 2 do now is do a little more volunteering but idk how b/c i have 2 apply for early action in November and idk if that would b enough time. im pretty much lockd now i can only hope the things i have done during 9th 10th and 11th are good enough 2get me in=[
