Concert Chorale
2nd Sporano 4 LIFE
No disrespect or anything but I hated the concert chorale. Well, not all of them but when i used to eat in the cafe , they used to come in there all loud and singing and just being obnoxious. Now the gospel choir was off the chain. Were they a part of concert chorale?
A lot of people had an issue w/ us coming in singing after rehersal to dinner but nobody seemed to care when the band would wake up the campus every morning the first two weeks of school making their "crabs"march from the music building to the Cafe doing their chants! I know they may have gotten on some nerves sometime but overall, we were pretty cool. Almost everyone in chorale was either a member or an officer in many organizations on campus and I remember one year when the whole royal court except "Miss Freshman " was members of chorale. We were not obnoxious, we just got tired of being hated on by people just b/c of how Doc would act sometimes. No, the Gospel choir is a different group from chorale and not to toot my horn but the gospel choir did not sound that hot really until maybe 1999. Before that, they were just ok. It was Chorale that brought those spirirtually moving songs like "Order my Steps"," Wade in the Water", "Hiding Place" our version of " I Believe I Can Fly" and "Jehova Jirah". I know you have been in at least one worship service or chapel and heard us blow. I had friends in Gospel choir and they did their thing but Chorale was always better. We had scholarships, we went on tours all over the country and before my time, they use to sing over seas. Dr. Bethune started the chorale to raise money for the school. At one point and time, we were the top fundraising organization on the campus. I ain't mad at cha', I just wanted to clarify that b/c there were many misconceptions about chorale people. We spent so much time together between rehersals and traveling until people made assuptions about the whole group when it may have been a few people who would do stuff. I have to admit, after freshman year, I never stood in line in the Cafe unless I was in the grill line and even then, if a chorale person was in line upfront, I would skip and go where they were. It wasn't a nice thing to do but as a freshman in chorale, if we were at a restaurant or anywhere, freshman were made to eat last. Of course, I didn't take that rule sitting down. I would act a damn fool on the upperclassmen sometimes. It was something that came along w/ the territory of proving yourself, you know, the whole "crab" thing. So when I became an upperclassman, I just flat out refused to wait in another line. Anywho, are you going to homecoming this year? You know this is our 100th anniversary so they are going to show out for every event.
Wow!
You must not have EVER seen the chorale perform to make a statement like that. There have been times where we could not finish a concert due to the fact that people had the holy ghost. See, it is one thing to pretend to have "a spirit" on you and another to really have the "holy ghost"... Like I said in previous post, I had friends in Gospel choir, they were straight but there is a big difference between Concert Chorale and Gospel choir. The major differences are:
1. Concert chorale gives scholarships
2. Concert chorale raises money for the college
3. Concert chorale travels more
4. Concert chorale's repertoire is very diverse. It is not how loud and boisterious a choir can sing, it is the quality and difficulty of the music that a choir sings. Anybody who can carry a tune can sing gospel music but how many people do you know can take a classical piece and turn it out?
5. Concert chorale is exposed/ works with some of the most well known composers, musicians and singers in the world. We do clinicals with Glen Burleigh, Max Roach and Dr. Mumphrey just to name a few. We have opened for Yolanda Adams, Fred Hammond, John P. Kee, Virtue and many more I cannot think of right now.
The whole point of this post was to inform people about the chorale's reunion, not to try and validate the value of the chorale. We do that every Sunday, during our Spring breaks and Summer tours. The many students that Doc has helped go through college without financial troubles speaks for the chorale. When the Gospel choir start being more productive rather than entertaining, holla at cha' girl... :x
