Memphis, TN
Hello! Hopefully I will be attending famu in the fall and im from Memphis TN. I heard that most people who go to famu are from Florida. I think I will be feeling left out. So...if you applied to famu as an out of state student could u reply telling me where u are from and how was ur transition(if u are alraedy there).....Thanx!

well i can tell u that most of the schools i'm applying to are out of state.famu is one of them. most likely i will be attending school out out state unless money becomes an issue.i'm coming from cali. but when i was looking at collegeboard, i think about half of the students for most of the hbcu's were coming out of state so you should be fine. its all about meeting new ppl anyways and surrounding yourself with different kinds of people. I hope that helps somewhat.lol.i'm in the same boat as you kinda

I live in Florida, but don't consider myself being from Florida.(lived down here 5 years) I was born and practically raised up north. You won't be alone...at all.

Girl naw you won't be the only one!! I'm from Chicago going to Famu most of my schools were out of state too. I really think that helps you stand out though being from a different state. Even though most people are from Florida hey it doesn't hurt to mix it up a bit

Whats up Tennessee Family? I went to school in Tennessee for Undergraduate and Florida for graduate school. Most of the graduates that I have met from FAMU are from all over. Therefore, I don’t think you will be left out. Best wishes with your future endeavors!

I'm coming from Chicopee, Massachusetts. Good luck trying to figure out where that is. lol No one ever knows where chicopee is but once i say Springfield they know. Well its right next to springfield, so close it might as well be called that. I'm nervous about being an out of state student too but I'm ready to throw deuces at the north for good! lol

I definately understand how you feel Serreen, i came to FAMU by myself from Dallas, Texas. My transistion was pretty easy for me because i ran for Senate as well as participated on the Dorm Step Team, of which i met a lot of people doing both. Yea there are a lot of people here from FL but there are also a lot of people from out of state. I would say the ratio is close to 50/50. I'm now working on my 2nd degree @ FAMU, some of my best friends are from anywhere from FL, to PA, VA, etc. Regardless of where u come from, the school as well as upperclassmen try to make the transition for you as easy as possible.

thanx every1! i was just a LITTLE worried bcuz everytime i go out of town they have something to say about what is different about me bcuz im from memphis tn! they be like "memphis people" do this and do that. My bro lives in rhode island and when i go up there they act like they dont understand anything i say. my friend from cali doesnt understand my slang. lol. i heard that we dance differently too. i had no clue. and i notice that at famu people click up by their areas. like the pple from atl, DC, and Miami...but i probably be 1 of the only pple reppin the 901! lol. but im str8. i know it is going to be a good experience and im excited about starting something new!
