Government Programs For Students In Need

Do you live off campus while you are attending an HBCU?  Below are resources to help you pay for your energy cost.

1.        LIHEAP FY 2009 Benefits

a.       This program is to help you pay your heating and cooling costs for Fiscal Year 2009.  For information call

        THIS IS A  GRANT  and all you need to do is apply.

b.     For cooling (usually electric) the maximum is $350; For heating the maximum is $350

2.        HBCU Students, you qualify for Food Stamps – this is not derogatory in any way – my taxes, your parents’ taxes and your taxes if you have ever worked pay for this – grant.  Yes GRANT – anything the government gives you that you do not have to pay back is a grant just like your PELL.

3.        Any State Department of Human Resources Division of Family & Children Services.

a.        If your annual income from grants & student loans is below $21,660.00 YOU qualify.   You may also apply for the Energy Assistance Program (EAP) at this same location.  Look for your city and county location and add the words Community Action Authority, Inc. to find additional ‘emergency’ help for paying utility bills.  (This one includes water).

HBCU students & alumni don’t be shy about sharing this information.  If you are lucky enough not to need help, perhaps you know someone who does.
