Problem With Living On Campus And Having A Roomate Posted on 12-17-2003
jomarr68

I will be a freshman this coming fall (thats right '04), hopefully at Hampton. I have a problem with living with people. I hate loud music , uncleanliness, late night hours, and other stuff that might not bother other people bothers me. I was wondering if in college especially HBCUS Do the students play loud music? If you are a clean person then how do/did you deal with messy roomate? Are there times when everyone has to be quiet? Are the bathrooms clean and usable?

are you serious? let the problems begin then! college students don't sleep until 5:00 in the morning. loud music at all hours of the night is considered normal. and you know that quiet hour that the RA tries to strictly enforce the first couple of days? well it doesn't exist by the 2nd week! i had three roomates in my freshman year and it was not fun. they blasted their music all hours of the night knowing I had a 7:00am class. they were pigs, left their underwear laying around with stains on them. there's more horror to this story but i don't feel like getting into details. however, having a roomate can be fun if you both respect each other, and have consideration for each other. my roomates didn't have any respect and from what i've seen nor home training, and when it gets like that you need to speak to your community director and get a room change.....I suggest that you all come up with common rules that everyone can agree with once you arrive.

Damn, dont come to Tennessee State. My freshamn year was nothing but quiet. I cant speak for all HBCUs but I know that TSU has some big **** roaches in our bathrooms. Also, loud music is the norm. We also penny locked our punk **** R.A. Water gun fights at 2 in the mornng(knowin we all had 8 o'clocks) and pizza after midnight is a must. But believe me, it will be just like home after a while.

From reading your post, you might just wanna consider living off campus...cause just about all the things you named WILL HAPPEN...dont get me wrong, I dont put up wit a dirty **** apartment amongst my roommates...I make sure everybody cleans and whatnot...but since yo will be living in a dorm, if loud music isnt coming from ur room, it will be coming from the room next to yours..and TRUST ME...the community style bathrooms will be nasty as hell so prepare yourself t be adjusting, or prepare to look for an apartement off campus....

You might want to consider a single room. You're just gonna have to pay extra.

this reminds me of something that happened my freshman year in college while living in the dorms. one day I walked into the bathroom to wash my hands, and there was the biggest piece of feces i'd ever seen in my life lying right there in the sink. on top of the faucet someone left a sign saying, "look, I've just given birth!!!!!!!!!!!!!". i had nausea for a couple of days after seeing that! but yeah that's how it is living amongst other people. you have to deal with clean and nastiniess from strangers.
