its gonna sound really corny, but students from HBCU's are like families for real..like everytime an Alumni comes to my job or whatever, we both get all excited, like we family. HBCU's are obviously more crunk also. To our professors we are more then a face, were a name (well, for me)...hmmm....more later..

I agree a LOT with that. When I see somebody back in L.A. with a FAMU hat or anything I gotta talk to em and we automatically bond. Whenever we see somebody out of town from our school, we usually will talk to them even if we never talked to them at school before. Even when I meet people from different HBCUs back at home, we will click.

^^^^ Basically. Ron and Bree summed up my whole opinion. I cant speak on a white college since I dont go there, but going to an HBCU is definitely like one big **** family. Just the thought of homecoming is a perfect example...Black folks love coming " home " and our home is Florida A&M University. Its great to see a whole bunch of people who have so much pride in their instituition from students to alums, to family and friends...and thats just not at FAMU...thats any school.
Gotta agree with yall. I haven't experienced college yet, but I have visited non hbcu's. I WAS actually going to FSU and i changed my mind, i was like naw man I have go to a black school. If I was staying in Miami, I was gonna go to UM. When i visited the "other" schools, I didnt feel comfortable. They were nice, but it wasn't the same. When I visited FAM and all the other hbcu's I felt at home, like I could relate.
It seems like Black students who attend HBCUs leave with a lot of self-confidence compared to those at PWIs... at PWIs, especially the larger ones, the professors don't give African American students much-needed attention, and they are seen as just another number; at HBCUs on the other hand, MOST professors have a genuine concern for their students and really want them to succeed... I also think it is really beneficial for Black students to attend HBCUs because of the family atmosphere and school pride that was mentioned before
I must agree with everything that has been said thus far. From my experience, being at an Hbcu feel like home because no matter how much mess this school puts me through, I wouldnt change it for the world. Just like relatives, no matter how much they get on your nerves, they're still blood, and I couldnt get through my days without them.
Man I'm cosigning this like a ****. This family thing is true as hell. I'll be at work and they'll ask whereI go. I'll say A&T of course and then we all get into this looong talk about what members of their family went there and me I'll like totatlly geeked and ****cuz I love my school and ish. I went to a white high school, HATED IT, because my school was racist as hell. But then I come here, surrounded by MY people, that usually know me waaay better than another race could, and there is already this instant bond.. I love that about HBCU's. When my friends come to me and they go to ECU and Carolina and Duke I be like, so what you go to a big D1 school. Biotches I go to an HBCU...you ain't NEVER gonna have as much fun and as much pride as I do when we all graduate...AIN'T NO WAY!

Yeah, when I visited other colleges, I didn't feel comfortable either. I went to orientation at four schools; two were HBCUs and two were PWIs. The students at the PWI's just didn't show any school pride and enthusiasm. The students at the HBCUs were outside greeting me before I even stepped foot on the campus! At the HBCUs, I was able to speak to the faculty AND students who were associated with the degree program that I was interested in. At the PWIs, NO ONE was available to answer my questions! I knew where I was going to be in the fall!!!!
Ok....well im the odd ball on here of course, and for me its the other way around. I dont knock HBCU's.....but in my situation....a PWI was the best school for me. I visited ODU, Hampton, VSU,VUU, and VCU.I wanted to go to a HBCU so bad (but not too far away from home), but my mom kinda made my decision for me. VCU is no where near the way yall was describing a PWI....i have great pride in my school, and so do others who go there....and to see a lot of educated black people here (alot more than i expected) makes me feel good about my school. I have that "family" atmosphere at VCU also. Yes there are cliques-but thats basically at every school you go to. The ONLY thing about VCU im not too happy with is the classroom size....most of my classes are a lil large (100+)...but even through that, the professors (if u talk to them) will want to help you and see you succeed. Your not necessarily a "number".I can't say that HBCU's do or dont do that for you cuz all ive done is been to a class or hung out at the dorms.....and you would have to fully experience a school to know the pro's and cons about it. All in all...VCU is the place for me right now........and I LOVE IT, I LOVE IT, I LOVE IT!
PS: Why is it that VSU, VUU, and VCU-all got that cheer ? :?
