Im upset and highly irritable. In the Hampton room there's a post about the band director Barney Smart at Hampton U. I don't understand y there is only two post on the subject. So i decided to publicly post it instead of in the private room. Now out of respect for Mr. Smart I'ma need every FORCE member to rep **** this post! Others who are not from HU can post as well.
I am still just a lil on the shocked side. It's weird to think that the same man who used to pull 90's with us and groovy to Ordinary Love and be a vibrant whitty person, is now gone. I'm going to miss his made up sayings/ words " BAND TERRORIST"  and his willingness to help out those in need.
I was shocked by this news. I will truly miss Mr. Smart's presence on campus. Though I only studied with him for one year, I have known him for over 4 years. He has helped me in so many ways, he has opened so many doors for me. He has helped me achieve all of my dream thus far. If it wasn't for him, I would not be at Hampton today. I will never forget him grooving to his arrangement of Ordinary Love. Or our brilliantly written fanfare. I will truly miss you Mr. Smart and my prayers and condolences go out to your family.
Let me just say a few words.....
Mr. Smart was a man of many words....as we all know. He was our leader and someone we could always go to if we had a problem. I will never forget Mr. Smart's ways....from grooving on that stool.....to showing us how to subdivide sixteenth notes (Miss-Iss-Ipp-I)...We all remember that right!! I will never forget the practice when he showed us the "Hampton Strut" and we were all like...WHAT!!?! The made up words that Mr. Smart came up with.....Lacksidasical.....(I know what I meant)....then we'd be like is that in the dictionary....Al Queda(not al queda...al Quayda)...All of his sound effects for the attacks....BAM! UHH! ...He always made me laugh with his...."speeches"...I was fortunate to have the chance to study under him for a year and I loved every minute of it. Again, I send my thoughts and prayers out to the family. I will truly miss you. We all love you like a father figure.
R.I.P. Mr. Smart
Man, I just saw Mr. Smart on Thursday and he was preparing for HUBC. He will be missed by all who knew him and all he touched. My prayers go out to his family, the FORCE, my fellow Hamptonians, and all who had the great honor to know him.
RIP Mr. Smart
I am still in denial!! I think that when I go to Convocation on Sunday Im going to see him in his office on the phone. I just know he is going to tell me to go get something or some one something.. or answer the phone... JUST DO SOMETHING..lol I just know that when the upperclassmen return he is going to have that same meeting with us about "hazing" and "band Terrorist". I just know that at the end of music rehersal he is going to sit there..... look through his scores... look up at the percussion and say....GIMMIE SOME OF THAT COWBELL!!!!....Then groove to "Lady Marmelade". I just know that he is going to be messin with the loud speaker and the mic...."BAND.......hello....hello...." There are just so many things that I just cannot even think of with out B SMEAZY!!
I have known B Smart since I was little!!! IF it werent for him.... I DEFINATLY would not be at Hampton. He always told me.... you dont have to come to Hampton... but where ever you go.. do not stop playing music!! I know he gave most of his band students the chance to get an education, most of those students would prolly be in the streets doing nothing if it werent for him. He always gave us assurance. He was NEVER SCARED!!...no matter how big or loud a band across the field was, he would always give us that look... with the gold tooth shining... and would say...Now LETS GIVE IT TO HIM!!!. I never knew any teacher who had a students back like him... yal in the FORCE ...remember Cleveland?!?!?! If it wasnt for him some of us would be in jail right now...lol I dont feel sorry for those people who were close to Barney... I feel sorry for those who never met him. He was a character that no one can match!! There will never be anyone like him.
All in all... I can only say that Smart was a kind person, he looked out for his band students...whether you knew it or not...he was looking out for you. As his students, we have a HUGE job ahead of us. For those who plan to attend HUBC... we must help make sure that this camp is the best camp there ever was. This season is really going to be tough, but Smeazy would not want us to mourn his death, but to carry on what he built and to make sure that for years to come we dont decline. We all must do what we can to make sure that we uphold the FORCE's name... cuz thats the SMART thing to do!!!
yea, i gotta second u on that one Kilo... im not sayin that everyone in the FORCE needs 2 hop on the computer if they wasnt already here, but the ones that ARE here need 2 get in this forum if u see this thread and represent for our fallen leader, Mr. Smart. I started the post in the Hamptons regarding this, and the turn out was VERY disturbing... i know for damn sure there are a lot more members of the FORCE and Hamptonians on here, cuz i see yall postin errywhere else.
But "B.Smeezy" (as he is affectionately known as by some of us in the band ) was more than a figure @ Hampton; he was known through out the collegiate world, and this is a more appropriate place for a post like this. He did not just affect Hamptonians, but many throughout the nation have heard his music and the creativity within.
I've been in the band for two years, and there was not a day out of those two years that I remember him to ever display lethargy or unwillingness to make us a better band. He gave me a chance to march, despite me not going to band camp or even having prior marching experience. That alone is reason enough for me to extend my thanks to him for having faith in me. NO ONE in the band can come and tell me otherwise.
We aint really see eye 2 eye at times but I know I've enjoyed my years as a Marching Pirate. Imma miss him.
It's crazy! At first, I didn't believe it.........now I'm just like damn, it's really true!
Mr. Smart also gave me the opportunity and the pleasure of marching with The FORCE, even though I have never been in a marching band. He also showed patience as I learned how to play the piccolo (I've only played the flute in HS ). I can't even picture another band camp without Mr. Smart.....without seeing him on campus everyday......without his inspirational "BAMs".....without his enthusiastic directing. I'll never forget his infamous "BAND TERRORIST" speech. Even though he had us rollin (especially in the front row), there was always some truth in his daily speeches. He wanted nothing but to make us better band members. Mr. Smart dedicated his life and his career to the fine art of music. He was an inspiration to us ALL, and he will be deeply missed
R.I.P. Mr. Barney E. Smart
I read the news at another site yesterday, and even though I'm not in the band, I'm still in deep shock, and hurt by the loss. I met Mr. Smart on numerous occasions, most recently to get a band pic for the yearbook, and he was always pleasant to deal with. My deepest condolences go out to his family, and those from the band.
