Should we have followed Marcus Garvey plan??? Posted on 07-12-2004
what's_on_my_mind

Marcus Garvey was a smart but stubborn man.... in the late 1800's and early 1900's...Mr. Garvey stood tall, strong, and poised against movements of Booker T. Washington, WEB DuBois, an others.... Mr. Garvey felt that people of African descent should follow his trans-African movement .....so we as an African People can live at peace away from racism and in our natural land of Africa... With Mr. Garvey's theory....he recieved many threats and bad-talk because of his thought of Africa..... However...Mr. Garvey felt this movement would help escape racism that deprive our everyday lives as African Americans and minorities in society... With this being said.. Booker T. Washington felt we should learn trade and earn the white man's respect...while Dubois believed in liberal arts education and the talented 10 percent of black folks...with these theories... Some of Booker T. Washington and DuBois theory has been inforced more than Garvey..in fact Garvey could be considered a laughing stock then... Now close to a 100 years later....I ask the question...would we have been better if we would have followed Marcus Garvey plan of returning to Africa... With all the racism.... All the trails of HBCU's recieving poor education... All the baby mama drama with black women All the drama of blacks dominating the jail system... Were our ancestors logical?? We took DuBois and Washington's advice.. we have grown..but we are still opressed....this can be seen in our everyday lives and in a government that laughs and turn it's back on black folks.... With all this being said...should we have listened to Garvey and went to Africa??? Do you all think we would be better off if we listened to him??? Please give your opinion...I will say mines later..

i definitely think that we would have been better off in Africa but since the majority of our ancestors chose to dismiss Garvey as said laughingstock and we are still here, we need to continue trying to make the best out of our situation. DuBois and Washington were trying to do that in the past. we need more to try and do it now in the present.

^^^ I agree with you to tryin to do it now....however....I feel it won't work Sorry to say...but black people aren't motivated like they use to be....

i'm motivated. are you? during the civil rights not everyone was all into what Dr. King had to say or what the "motivated" black people were doing. some blacks just wanted to leave things the way they were so as not to "cause trouble". but there were still those who refused to be quiet and stirred up as much trouble as they possibly could. there is no reason why we cannot do the same today. there are motivated black people. if there weren't, i don't feel this site would even exist. not dissin your point, just respectfuly disagreeing.

Go back to Africa??? Did ya'll compleely forget what happened in Liberia? Nigeria, Sierra Lione. What country in Africa is at peace right now? What country in Africa is so great that it could handle the influx of 35 million folx all at once? SHould I go to South Africa, where I can be called a Kaffir until the white folx hearts are content? Or how about I go to Somalia where I have to hide in fear from Warlords that pretty much dominate the country? Or how about Rowanda, where the country is JUST NOW recovering from their Civil War that left 1,000,000 women and children **** and hacked to peices. What folx fail to realize is that African Americans and African natives are two different cultures. Just because we have the same skin color doesn't mean you won't sell me out just like the white man. Hell, if all black folx practiced Black Unity then there wouldn't be constant Civil Wars and power struggles on Africa's continent. Hell, I wouldn't be tiwce as likely to get **** by another black person than compared to someone white.

I am somewhat torn on this issue. I know almost for a fact that it would be extremely hard/ near impossible for us to go back now and probably very hard to go back, back then. However, I will have to respectfully disagree with PimpTight, on his statement about how far detached we are from Africans. Contrary to many African American's beliefs today we are still today extremely African. Although we are 400 years removed we still have many things that remain African about us. The argument has often been brought up that many native Africans do not like African Americans, and this is a fairly valid argument. But what we have to realize is that the native Africans have been colonized and mislead just as the African Americans have, and now we look at each others as strangers instead of brothers and sisters. So while I don't think we would be able to go back to Africa now or probably then either I still think that we are very African at heart.

y'all know how I feel about this topic.. at this point, I don't think it would have done anything for us then or now.... what we NEED to do is focus on the problems that are facing us in the immediate future... elections.. Y'all.. don't put it past Bush.. THe Black Vote was and is NOT solid.. Africa has been the same thing since FOREVER, so our presence is not necessary.. If that is the only way to "claim backthe heritage" then y'all are mistaken... Arm yourselves w/ African history.. you don't need to spend the rest of your life in Africa to find that out... teach the children stuff they won't learn in AMerican schools... THere's a lot of stuff I didn't know until I got to Howard, and I'm trying to saoak as much knowledge as possible... But yea.. Leave the motherland alone.. we are as foreign to her as children stripped from her womb... though she would gladly welcome us, there are people who wouldn't...
