HBCU Choirs Subculture Posted on 05-28-2003
CBoyBaritone

As anyone can tell you who belongs to an HBCU choir, they can produce a pretty domineering subculture within the social collective of the school; in other words, the choir can take on a life of its own much like band. Hey, if you belong or have belonged to ANY choir from ANY HBCU, or are interested in Choir life at Hampton, feel free to ask or post anything here be it good, bad, or ****. NOTE: ( Please, if you're going to post something religious do not go overboard, this is not meant to be a religious post. Do not impose on other's beliefs. ) Choirs at Hampton and what they do: * means I'm a part of this one University Choir :? (Classical, Spiritual, Anthems, Operatic) * Gospel Choir "His Chosen Sounds" (Gospel, Anthems, Spiritual) + some travel Concert Choir (Classical, Modern, Spiritual, Anthems, Operatic, some Gospel) *all this + the most travel and touring Jazz Ensemble  (Jazz, scat, 2 concerts a year)

I am part of the NC·A&T·SU Fellowship Gospel Choir. We travel and seem to have our on spin on the spiritual theme. It's been a WONDERFUL expierence for me and i plan on being part of this group all my 4 years. It shows that God has a place in the hearts of student at HBCU's.

I was and always will be a B-CC Concert Chorale member!!!!! While attending B-CC, most of the schools pagents, Frats, Sororities, S.G.A and anything else was dominated by the chorale. It got so off the chain until people wouldn't even run because they knew what the outcome would be. The chorale now has over 200 people enrolled in the class. Being in the choir was like living in a real soap opera. The reason why is b/c we traveled every Sunday and sometimes during the week performing in churches and what not. Our rehearsals were Monday thru Friday @ 4pm sharp. We spent so much time with the same people so we sometimes lived in our own little world. We had a special language and everything. This was how we earned our scholarship money. We also went on Sring tour which was during spring break and a Summer tour which was after the end of spring semester. The spring tour was only a week but summer tour is usually 28 to 30 days long. People would be off the chain!!!! The bus ride was just as enjoyable as the stay in the hotels and seeing cities you know you would never sponsor yourself to go to. We were like a family and you know every family has alittle drama. I think the best and most unique part of being a part of the choir was that everybody had multi-talent. You could get your hair, nails and feet done because somebody in the choir could do it for you. We even had people that could make a dress for the winter or spring ball in the choir. I could talk all day about this. We had the most fun tourmenting the freshmen!!!!! There was a process to prove you really wanted to be in the choir. The elements of the process varied between the males and females but one thing was certain, you better not get caught without your crab hat from the crowning of the crabs night( freshmen wear neon green hats that are given to them their first week on the campus in a special Friday night ceremony) till the homecoming parade. If you were in Chorale and got caught w/o that hat before homecoming, it was going to be hell to pay w/ the upperclassmen!!!! As long as you live and you were ever in the chorale, you will remenber this song: Well I woke up this morning with my mind and it waaaaaassss... set on singggging..... in the concert chorale, in the concert chorale, in the concert choraaaale!!!!!!
