Just like, whether you like it or not, Smirnoff Ice is a BEER and has a different taste than Budweiser. It even says BEER on the bottle, or at least it used to. I actually (like most American beer connoseurs) choose mine depending on the season. Generally, your lighter and more crisper beers in the spring and summer and a darker, more robust beer in the fall and winter months. A beer can have a lot of flavour to it without all the extra sugar and whatnot that are in "flavoured malt beverages". It depends on who brews it and how its brewed. The key is to not give into marketing. I enjoy a lot of beer that isn't very widely marketed, yet has a strong following. That's how Corona got expensive. You used to be able to get a six pack of Coronas for under $4. All the sudden, it got popular (like chicken wings, chitlin's and, BBQ...) and people started wearing the clothes and all that Sh*t and its now twice as much as it was four or five years ago. Go try some other stuff from people that not only can't afford to advertize on Super Bowl sunday, but wouldn't in the first place. My top pick? Yuengling, America's Oldest Brewery. Its not too expensive, but it has a good mellow flavour to it. Its considered an Amber beer. I don't know of too many stores that don't carry it.
