MTV2 Hip Hops 22 Best MCs is a sham Posted on 06-05-2004

Foxy Brown being on the list? KRS not in the top ten? Nelly being on the list? Big Pun higher than LL Cool J and Chuck D? This is BS, Foxy didn't even write much of her stuff. Lil Kim used her looks to sell her music. Big Daddy Kane wasn't on the list, nor were OutKast, Tribe Called Quest, or De La Soul. MTV should have never let silly people vote on this list. MTV is full of shyt. I grew up with hip-hop and my top fifteen is: 15. Snoop 14. DMX 13. Big Daddy Kane 12. Ice Cube 11. Scarface 10. LL Cool J 9. Chuck D 8. Tribe Called Quest 7. Run DMC 6. Jay-Z 5. Nas 4. OutKast 3. Eminem 2. Tupac 1. Biggie Smallz My list is my opinion, but it's a hell of a lot better than that MTV crap. Honorable mention goes to Ras Kass, Ghostface Killa, Method Man, Common, De La Soul and Queen Latifah. And Missy transcends MC status; her Lauryn Hill and Cee-Lo are in a category by themselves. What do yall think?

I feel you completely on Mos Def, Kool G Rap, Slick Rick. And I know they couldn't include everybody. But there are simply some people who DID NOT deserve to be on that list (ie Foxy Brown and Dr. Dre). If they had Dre up there, why not put P Diddy and Jermaine Dupri? At least Jermaine Dupri penned many of the songs by his stars (Da Brat, Kris Kross, Silk Times Leather, and Lil Bow Wow). Everytime folk talk about Pac and how "hard" he was, I think about him wearing a Da Shiki in that Same Song video. Pac as a revolutionary? Definitely. He had the total package: looks, substance, and a good actor. But in the MC game Biggie brought the most clever lyrics, the best delivery, and various styles. If Pac had the angst and passion, then Biggie had the skill. It's like comparing Whitney Houston to Mary J Blige. There are plenty of people who think MJB can't sing, but she brings emotion, however just as many people think that Whitney had the most technical singing voice of the past generation. It's apples to oranges.

There are numerous reasons why you can put Pac over BIG and vice versa but when it comes down to it Pac was the Best "MC" of the 90's...His Mic presence was better than Big's and MC can also stand for "Mover of Crowds" and nobody moved the crowd more than Pac. It's all about what you liked at the moment but you could have went elsewhere to get what BIG brought to the table (Big L, Rakim, ect) nobody could do what Pac did and that's one of the main reasons people put him as number one over Big.

And I am by no means trying to convert anyone to loving Big over Pac; I'm just saying that he is my #1, but as I said before it's a preference thing, just like the Jay-Z vs Nas thing. And I can't say that one's Mic presence was better than the other. That is COMPLETELY subjective. The energy in both concerts (and I've seen both live) was about the same. I'm just making the case for BIG. Truth be told, if that countdown had occured on BET, they might have had BIG over PAC. It's a battle that will rage on forever. How bout Jay-Z vs Nas?
