This is a great topic! Ya'll are giving me ideas for my summer reading. I cannot just name one though:
The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
The Dew Breaker by Edwidge Danticat (Haitian author)
Purple Hibiscus by Chimanda Ngozi Adichie
If you like classics, like old time consider The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas. It was as thick as Harry Potter, but good.
