I'm not sure how to phrase this question so... Posted on 07-13-2008

Okay. I'm going to try to make this question as generic as possible because if I don't know anything else when it comes to Greek orgs DISCRETION IS KEY! So, I just wanted to ask about the...popularity i guess...of some sororities over others... It just seems that at most schools AKA and DST are the main focus and the ones everyone talks about or wants to be a part of and the ones that win all the step shows and have the hottest strolls and the crunkest parties and what not Why is it that u hardly hear about Zeta and SGRho? Are there any schools where these two are the "hottest" or "crunkest"? Why does it seem that these two are not as...i dont know...i dont want to use the word popular again but...popular...as the others? And that can even include multicultural organizations... I was thinking it had something to do with AKA and DST being the oldest sororities...but correct me if I'm wrong My mom said it depends on the region. For example, my mom grew up in the DC/Maryland area, and she said that there were some sororities that she hardly knew anyone from, but when she moved to NC and went to NCCU it was the complete opposite... I know this is long...sorry...Im just naturally curious and long winded (lol) Just asking...

I just want to point out that the "orgs" don't offend people... People in the orgs offend people... Just a note of clarification because I know that any sister can get twisted... Regardless if she's DST, AKA, SGRho, or Zeta... I love all my Sister Greeks and have nothing but admiration for them. Women who are true to their respective organizations shouldn't be catty or silly...
Yeah, you do have a point but people tend to judge orgs particularly by the people that are in them. The organization is only a image but the people we see, who are members, is what most people base their judgment on. I agree that women shouldn't be catty or silly in these organizations. In most cases, it might not be the whole chapter that is rude but the ones that are, tend to over shadow the nice ones. Then the whole chapter gets the label as having a funky attitude and that might not even be the case. It only takes a few rotten apples to destroy the whole bunch. I don't understand why some black women can't get along with other black women. Whether a person is a part of a Greek organization or not, they need to respect people. It is about having manners number one. I guess some of these girls that join these Greek organizations never had home training or manners to begin with. People tend to think that they became that way after joining, but 9 times out of 10, they were never liked or ever popular to begin with. That is when you see the ones with the REAL bad attitudes! Anyway, I could go on and on about this all day but I guess you can't change anything that has been established for over 100 years. The only thing that I can do is pray for folks, so that they can receive revelation of their ways.

I know that people do, that's why it takes people (like myself) to point that out. Greek letters or not, a person's character ultimately is about them, not their letters... I know that I've been really nice and open to most interested young women who ask me questions, but if there happens to be one time I have a bad day and don't feel like being bothered, people see may see me as "the Delta with an attitude". Which is totally unfair... Why can't I just be FAMUDva with an attitude? I have over 250,000 Sorors and I know for sure that the 10 at xyz University do not speak for our entire organization. I have male and female greek friends and trust me, at the start of the day, we all put our pants on one leg at a time. People are people. I do get what you're saying, but it's unfortunate that life if filled with so many generalizations... I personally put my best face forward ALWAYS! But then again, I'm FAMUDva first... FAMUDva is a cool chick who happens to be a Delta. I'm not "the Delta" who happens to be FAMUDva. All jokes aside; As far as greeks and non greeks go, folks need to grow up... IMO there are short falls on the side of both SOME interested people and SOME greeks when dealing with greek life. That's just my 7 cents...

Well, the reason why people associate the organization with the person for example, "FAMUDva the Delta" is because Greek organizations are labels. That is why I am kind of hesitant of joining because I don't want the label. I don't want someone to associate me with xyz, because I am my own individual. I am too valuable for anyone to place a label on me. Yet, that is what people do when you join a Greek org. They associate you with the organization and sometimes even the stereotypes. Even though you would think that grown folk wouldn't do such a thing, but they do it all the time.

I guess.... I am FAMUDva the individual, who has accomplished a lot in my own right and honestly speaking I stand on my own. I can't speak for every individual or every Greek organization, but I know that my Sorority has MANY dynamic women who stand as individuals who make our organization so great. You know the saying... be careful when you judge a book by it's cover.... The cover being what you see in your microcosm campus. Black Greek organizations exist because of individuality (believe it or not). There is no way that organizations founded in 1906, 1908, 1911, 1913, 1914, 1920, 1922, and 1963 could possibly still exist if "everyone had to conform". Understanding each of the divine 9's history give insight to that fact. A sisterhood is not about every person conforming. The dynamics of Greek life are something you kinda have to experience to understand... It's not for everyone, but trust me when I say all of us are not the same.

I'm sure at the Graduate level it is not about making people "conform". I'm sure most of that goes on with joining at the undergraduate level. I know this is off topic but another issue that I was concerned with, is that do they make people take oaths at the Graduate level? Swearing or taking oaths, is something that goes against my beliefs. For one thing, it is a form of a covenant ceremony and God views and takes covenants seriously! Are you forced to take oaths and can you still join without going through all the Greek rituals? Sometimes I wonder if I am taking the Greek stuff to another level, but sometimes I think that the practices that Greeks do are rather close to idolatry practices. What do you think? I know that there are a lot of Christians that are a part of these Greek orgs, and the ones that are Christian you don't see them wearing a bunch of paraphernalia nor do they have a bunch of figurines in their homes. Also, they don't normally participate with hazing nor do they have mean spirited attitudes toward people who are interested in joining. Yet, I'm just wondering if I'm taking it to another level or am I getting revelation of something that has deep roots that we don't know anything about. For instance, the Masonic groups have deep roots that can be traced all the way back to Baal and black people emulated this stuff from white people and they don't even know where this stuff was originated from. So is it the same with the Greek organizations? Is it something that people don't have a clue about its origins? I am a part of one of the Masonic groups, for women, and my sister and I have researched this stuff and it is traced way back. We were very surprised at the things we found. My sister has denounced her membership, and I'm not involved with the group as much anymore.

I was wondering that too. But what's different, is that I'm beginning to find in my research of the Divine Nine, a lot chapters of Zeta and SGRho up here in New York. Which is odd, because most of the sororities/fraternities up here aren't even African-American. A old teacher of mine is a Zeta soror and says that they have some pretty tight chapters here in some schools within Brooklyn and Queens, as well as the upstate region. I'm beginning to think that it's because SGRho and ZPB are sororities that were originated in the Northern region (then again, Maryland confuses me as a border state, is it a Northern state or a Southern one?).

Not in every undergrad chapter... I'll just keep it at that. I will say that my Sorority has only ONE membership intake process. There is not a separate "process" for Alumnae (grad) vs. Undergrad... I cannot speak for all organizations, but will give that note of clarification about mine.

I'm really perplexed at where you get your information from... The quoted statement above is really perplexing to me... As to your other point, I have Sorors who are Eastern Stars and there are countless Greek members that are members of Masonic groups AND their respective organization. I am not a member of a Masonic group so I can't speak to their processes. Like I said, Greek life ain't for everyone.... And yes, I'm very Christian, my Founders were very Christian, and many of my Sorors are Christian and serve well.

You still didn't answer my question. I asked if you could join a Greek org without taking oaths? Also, about the statement about Christians, that perplexed you, I would assume that those who are Christians or "believers" wouldn't have a bunch of figurines of Greek stuff to make their homes appear like a shrine, nor should they be mean spirited, nor should they be participating in hazing. If so, they would most definitely need to examine their walk with God and make sure they aren't stepping into a fine line of idolatry. Anyway, the Christians that I know that are a part of the Greek orgs, which includes a lot of my family members, they don't have a bunch of paraphernalia in their homes and most definitely aren't involved with hazing people. For one thing, they aren't going to throw everything away and offend God by participating in such acts. It's about having the blessing of the Lord on their lives, and they wouldn't throw it all away for a bunch of foolishness. A lot of the people I know who joined a Greek org, did it before becoming saved, and I'm sure that they would make a different choice if they had the knowledge of God's word back then. Anyway, to each its own. I have witnessed those who do exalt and esteem those Greeks orgs, have a lot of issues. They aren't prosperous in every area of their lives. I can give a lot of examples, but I'm not going to go into that on this forum.

Whoa. You could be an Eastern Star and be part of a Greek sorority? I didn't know that. I thought it was one or the other. That's a pretty cool way to build karma.
