Interest Questions Posted on 05-02-2009

I don't know if anyone has posted these questions before but this is my personal experience and I just want to see what type of feedback that I would recieve. Well I have always wanted to join a BGLO, before I came to college. I always "knew" which one i wanted to be because either everyone around me was in this particular org. or people told me to choose their org. However, when I came to college, I began to do my research and spent time with the org. I thought I was interested in. I learned a lot. I also learned that I am not 100% certain anymore of which org. I want to join. My predicament is everyone is saying do research and join what fits your personality. Now the org. all seem to have very positive aspects to them which does not help me to really differentiate which one it is that I really want to join. I have not seen any negatives, besides probably some chapter members. So onto the personality part, how is it that I can choose an org. that fits my personality without being stereotypical if that makes sense. How will I find out particular "personality traits" of a certain org. at large, because if I look at it chapter wise, that might make things a bit complicated? Another question is alot of people say to choose based on the org. itself rather than just on the chapter, but then some people say look at what the chapter does such as community work etc.? What if the chapter that does the most is an org. you are not fully interested in and the org. you are is not very active. Does that mean you should not join that org., or join and work to help that organization to grow and flourish and excel in the activities they lack. Any other tips about research and choosing would also be great, because I dont want to ask the wrong questions.

Thats another confusing aspect of it to me, because some people tel you don't base your opinion on a particular chapter, but on the org. as a whole. So thats confusing, because realistically you have a group of men/women who come from different places different backgrounds, of course everyone won't automatically love each other and get along well, but thats just alittle puzzling like should I not join because some of the girls in this bunch aren't the coolest or should I still join because I like what that org. is all about and what the org. stands for?

The reason why I said you need to observe how the girls of xyz act on your campus, is because you will spend a lot of time with those particular girls.  You are right that you can't go on the national websites of these orgs to know if the particular organization will fit your personality.  The personality of each org is on your particular campus.  Even if you have family members that are a part of xyz that are nice or good people, that doesn't mean that they will be nice on your campus.  I wouldn't even look at the aspect of community service because all of the Greek orgs have community service projects.  You would need to go on who you would feel most comfortable around.  Trust that you don't want to be miserable with a group of females that are totally opposite from your personality.  You will be spending a lot of time around these girls and spending a lot of money.  So you better choose wisely or not at all.  You don't won't to waste your time or money and realize that you can't stand the girls of the organization.  I'm not talking about looking at sterotypes such as long hair/light skinned, I'm talking about observing these girls personalities.  For example, Do they speak and smile to people on campus?  Are they cool or are they standoffish?  Do they look you up and down and roll their eyes on the yard or in the cafeteria?  Those are just some examples you can figure out the rest.  Anyway, if it gets to complicated for you to decide maybe Greek life is not for you.  Just focus on getting up out of school and possibly joining other organizations that aren't affiliated with Greek orgs.0

*** Another thing I would like to add, it would be important for you to pick the org that fits your personality on your campus because if you pick one that doesn't fit your personality, most likely those girls will reject you anyway.  Greeks tend to pick girls that they like or feel they are like them.  If you are totally opposite from them, they aren't going to like you anyway.  So it is best to pick a org that is closer to your personality to begin with.  I'm just being honest.  Some might disagree but that goes on in a lot of situations.  For example, even at jobs people gravitate to those who are closer to their personality.  That is when cliques start to form at jobs.  So look at the Greek system the same way.  Those girls are going to pick who they want in their clique based on who they feel comfortable with or who's closer to their personality.
