I agree cuz it happens when i'm out w/ my sister all the time. She's alot darker than me and likes to keep her hair cut short while I'm light skinned w/ long hair. However I think that my sister is alot prettier than me but alot of guys choose to ignore that because she ain't their set type. But she's always told me to watch how I handle the guys who approach me cuz they might jus be interested inna trophy. ANd when me & my sister are out together it jus proves her point. I think dudes like that are whack tho and need to realize that they missin' out.

I haven't noticed a major effect in terms of lifestyle, although it has come up in discussion. Being light-complexioned, I can't say that I have noticed any variance in treatment or opportunity over other Blacks, either from Blacks or Whites. If there is, it is usually attributable to some other aspect of behavior. There is the usual experience of people not considering you "Black enough" which is an entirely different topic. I actually think that light-complexioned Black men have somewhat of a disadvantage over dark-complexioned Black men at times. I can't speak from a woman's perspective, though. Holla!

I think that light skinned still does have an advantage over dark-skinned esp. if you are so light you could pass for Caucasian like some of my family members. It all stems back to the days of slavery when the separated the slaves into house slaves and field slaves. The house slaves were the light skinned people who either were just born lighter or had some white in them and were able to work by the master instead of working the fields. From that time until now we have been taught to hate each other. One of the main points of slavery was to dismantle the African race and make them as weak as possible, and one way to do that was turn them against each other. It is all very well documented in the "Willy Lynch Letter" I suggest that book to everyone of color. But yea key point is it still goes on now just not as blatantly and it all stems from slavery.

This topic has been done before in HBCU Issues and Concerns, and in that one everyone was saying that people aren't color-conscious in the south . . . I begged to differ, but now folk are pretty much agreeing with me. On another note, brothers, have you ever found it harder to get the attention of a pretty dark-skin girl over a pretty light skinned girl? I rarely find the light skin girls to be stuck-up. . . <==dealing with the caramel curse and very openly pining for a beautiful dark skinned princess so I might purify my bloodline.

I've had black men and white men come up to me and say:"You are so pretty to be so DARK" ,my response is an immediate cuss out. I've ran into many negative situations for my dark complexion. And I'm proud to be dark I am not ashamed, and I got love for yall lighterskinned females too. I don't hate

Well I live out in Cali...and maybe its juss the part that im in but all tha brothas out here date nothin but light skinned gurls. U either gotta be light skinned, mixed, or mexican...and it ****. Me being a dark skinned young lady...feels unloved and unappreciated! I once had this "friend" who would always put me down for bein dark...cause she was light. She used to tell me how **** dark people are...and made me a very self conscience(sp?) person. But i do believe that light skinned gurls do get a lot more attention...because they're light and got the pretty hair and pretty eyes. Yall remember the paper bag test?! Well my mama and pops would tell me bout that. How if the person u was datin was darker than the paper bag then (some) parents wouldn't accept them. Somethan like that!
