I was sitting back thinkin tha other day.....we are all taught to go to school....get good grades so we can get a good job and work till we retire and then live on Social Security and other benifits......well with all that stuff going out tha window in our generation I'm just wondering what are ya'll expecting out of college? After College?
Everybody should read "Financial Peace" by Dave Ramsey. He ties in money with spirituality. One of his major themes was " If you are a fool with your money now, than God will not bless you with more later", So remember that money is a blessing, and if we cant handle our finances, we are just **** our selves in the foot.
Stay away from credit cards and live below your means. Pray and give cheerfully to others in need, this is the way to Financial Freedom.
I invested $1500 dollars 2 years ago, and that will be what I live off of when I retire. We have to remember that compound interest is the best thing since sliced bread.
HOLLA
Hotep,
That sound cool I am going to have to check into that.

To be totally honest, my "American Dream" has nothing at all to do with my finances. I just wanna be happy. Like the proverb says in my signature, or at least how i perceive it, true success only comes from happiness and knowing that the world is better because of you. I wanna know that my life has touched someone in a positive way. I dont wanna be remembered for my money, but rather for my deeds. That's all. Maybe my reply was a lil off topic.

everybody has their own american dream....in tha topic was are just talking about tha standard one....you know have a big crib...a few cars....don't have to answer to anybody......you know....tha life styles that most entertainers or atheltes live.....reguarding what you are saying that is cool that you just wanna be happy....but ask yourself....would you truely be happy working for somebody else (sending their kids to school and paying for their vacations) your whole life???...even if you make good money will you be able to enjoy tha dough?......I'm sorry.....don't mean to preach....was supposed to give 2 cents and gave 5.... :?
Im not sure if i'll be happy working for other people. I do know that I want to work for government agencies and one day open my own non-profit organization. And if it takes working for the government for me to get enough support and financial resources to do my own thing, then so be it. The ends is important enough for me to deal with the means.

word up sista...I feel that....just as long as you actually know what tha means are....and don't get half way down tha road and realize these means aren't gonna get you to tha ends either as fast as you would have liked or at all just my 2 cents..
Yes, provided that the job is seen as a means to an end, and not the end itself.
In order to achieve financial freedom, you must have the following:
1. Responsible spending habits.
2. A job or other type of income that allows you to earn more than your marginal propensity to spend (business majors you know what I am referring to). In other words, you are earning more than your living expenses.
3. An investment portfolio that allows room for growth.
The trend nowadays is to diversify in order to limit risk, but few people understand the concept behind it. "Diversification" means using several different types of investment to generate income. Most people ASSUME that this means invest in mutual funds or other "balanced" investments that ultimately spreads their funds too thin to see a significant return.
An ideal portfolio would include:
1. Real Estate - high ROI, retains most of its value.
2. Business Ventures / Venture Capital - can be risky, but very profitable. Especially if the business creates residual income.
3. Stock / Equity - No fad investing (penny stocks, day trading, "hot stock tips" etc.) Go with "blue chips" - large firms that will be around for a long time and provide sustained growth resistant to market trends. IE. Walmart, Intel, Disney, etc.
4. Safe Bets - Investments that don't provide big gains, but slow, steady growth. Examples would be mutual funds and bonds. This way, if your other investments fall through, you won't lose your shirt.
Most of us are young, and can afford to take risk. Most people investing today avoid it, because they can't afford to lose. If you don't take risk, you will not generate return. Period.
I'm working a job right now. My objective is not necessarily to get promoted up within the firm, but to meet my immediate needs as a student and be able to put aside funds to purchase some real estate once i graduate. Ownership is the only freedom. Holla!
