I was talking to a friend of mine, who was telling me about a job interview she had....the Employer asked her what school she went to and she said "Howard".....The employer's reply was "Oh you went to one of the "good" black schools. (employer obviously being MD' or melanin deficient).
Our discussion then went on to another comment that she heard from one of her white friends from high school. the girl informed her of how whites viewed black schools as the "A-E-I-O-U" of black schools:
:arrow: Howard
:arrow: Hampton
:arrow: Spelman
:arrow: Morehouse,
:arrow: and SOMETIMES FAMU
While I love Howard and its everything, i still have respect for other HBCU's and their contribution to Blacks and America, I was taken aback by this convo. And this served as a constant reminder of the reputation of HBCUs....What's everyone else's view on White's and HBCU's? Most of us will be graduating in the next year or so and your Alma Mata on your resume is gonna mean more than you think.
Yeah, NeoSoulBrotha is on point...as usual. lol. I don't think it's a matter of greatness, or one being better than the other. It's a matter of "name popularity", just as it is among PWI's. When it was college applications time and all of the seniors at my hs were talking about the schools they wanted to go to..of course everyone was quick to say "UCLA" or "USC" or "Columbia" or "NYU"...why? becuz those were the big names. There are other PWI's that are just as great, but we all know that peeps only feel what everyone else is feelin. People are fickled and can be like cattle sometimes, ...they follow the herd :arrow: . :roll:
I think that although many Whites are not as familiar with HBCU's, those who have visited one or come into contact with graduates are almost always impressed. Considering that the academic and social environment at HBCU's are almost always very different than PWI's.
While many PWI's focus on providing a comfortable student atmosphere, most HBCU's are focused strictly on academics. That is why there is generally a more disciplined and serious atmosphere at HBCU campuses as opposed to elsewhere, where the student body is more concerned with tapping the keg than going to class. We can hold it down at the club, but the classroom always comes first.
I don't think that the colleague that you were speaking with was trying to be demeaning toward HBCU's, but rather recognizing that you are an alumni of one of the more well-known schools. Similar to comparing Michigan or MIT against, lets say Towson. If I told an employer I had a degree in computer science from MIT, they would probably make a similar comment, not saying that Towson is an inferior school.
Unfortunately, most people don't always get an inside look at HBCU's, and those that do usually are best informed about the Big Five (Howard, Hampton, Morehouse, Spelman, and FAMU or Clark). There are equally great things going on at Virginia Union, Norfolk State, Savannah State, and lots of other schools that don't get the same kinds of publicity or attention.
We have to continue to represent our institutions well and command respect. Holla!
B/c I am from NC people always ask why didn't i go to NC A&T (white people included) Its like thats the only hbcu they know that exist in NC but what about Fay. State, Shaw, WSSU? I think its our job as students at HBCUs to educate others on the beauty of attending a black institution.
More to come... ::drinks coffee::
I remember one day I was in the cafeteria at work...and was introducing myself to some white interns. My friend with me was like "I go to Syracuse"...and they were like "OK ...."syracuse...blah blah blah". Then they asked what school I attended. I proudly said Hampton University................. :? was what I got from them.
But you also have to think they discredit some of their own universities...so what makes you think they are gonna have full respect for ours.
