Is it "cool" to be extra-country? Posted on 08-03-2004

I have been at FAMU two years, and even though I used to to come to Florida every year or two growing up, I didn't see much of what I have seen since I have been here. It seems like people take pride in bein extremely country. What I mean, is those who have horrible dredlocks and sometimes gold teeth, and just talk ignorant as hell as if it is tite. I don't have any problem with a country accent, but there are some people who completely over-do it, and who never talk proper, as if it is the thing to do. I was watchin grandaddy souf on TV, and he was talkin about "down here, we don't pronounce the th at the end of words. We don't say south, we say souf. We don't say north, we say norf" and I was lookin like man this guy's a idiot. I could see if a kid was raised to say souf and that's all he knew, but for somebody who knows how to say it right but chooses to say it wrong just sounds stupid as hell to me. Now have things always been like this? Is it just a Florida thing? I definitely realize that all people down south are not like this, so I am not generalizing anyone at all. But for these select people who take pride in bein ignorant and never lookin presentable, is it somethin that they think is good? I don't get it...

It's not just Florida...and just like ol boi said...we don't really notice it until those that are not from tha south point it out. And some people don't try to do...but there are those that do it...It's mainly has to do with tha way you were brought up...cuz most likely if you know how to say it...9 times out of 10 it will be pronounced like you do. And I wouldn't say it's pure ignorance...there are those that say it out of ignorance and then you have those that say it just because they are so used to hearin it....I KNOW...WE SAY EVERYTHING DOWN IN MISSISSIPPI...Like...Here...we don't say here...we say heyah
yeah definently cosigns, i didnt know about my heavy accent or the way i pronouce things until I went to Howard....the thing that got on my nerves was that arrogant Howard students from other places outside of the south would try to "correct" me.....or explain to me how i sounded "ignorant".....BIOTCH IMMA GROWN **** WOMAN  , and if i say "south" like "da souf" its my perogative cause its the way i was raised and people around me talk like I do lol......but even though I do have the REALLY heavy accent, people are suprised I can make a professional business presentation like a Wall Street executive *hhmph*...i have to say south georgians though are more country than anyone

lol..I think for the most part it's a south thing. I know when I first got to Florida I had the hardest time understanding what people were saying cause they're southern accents were soooo thick...I know I asked people to repeat them selves slower and alot more clearer on many of occassions. I didnt want to seem rude but alot of the southerners I came in contact with at school and in other southern states don't anunciate (sp) their words...so it just made it that much more difficult to understand. Funny story tho: I was talking to my boy from school. And he says he is from a real small country town in Georgia. Anyhow, we were talking about me going up to his house one weekend just to go...and he said to me " Dont be surprised if people give u dirty looks at times cause you from up north and and as soon as they hear u talk they will be able to tell...and they may think that you think you are better than them or sumthin...so you gonna have to excuse them country folks. " lol...i just laughed about it...but that is extremely ignorant on those people if they are going to pre judge me on what they THINK I am just cause I have an up north accent...

that is true.... but when I first came to Hampton, the dudes from the east coast thought i was inferior because I had golds and talked with a heavy accent. Its a two way street, and both parties need not prejudge

No its not a Florida thing or south thing, becuase I ranned into alot of northen people who off-the-chain with they ****too. You cant say country is ignorant just because you not use to it...thats stupid, corny, and IGNORANT! Thats just like me meeting someone from up north and saying they sound ignorant because they dont talk like me  what kind of ish is that??. Most likely when you move from one place to a whole new environment, people are going to look, sound, and act differently. You just got to adapt to it.

I dont think he is saying that its ignorant to be country and have a accent...If you grew up in the south...then clearly thats how u are gonna talk...but he is saying some people will go out their way to OVER DO IT...which is ignorant...and its the same for someone from any region of the coutry...to over do their accent, just to do it.. and like I said it is CLEARLY ignorant for those people that are from some lil **** country town in Ga my friend said would give me dirty looks and think I was better than them just cause I have an up north accent. But maybe they dont get out much.

Thank you for calling the accents "southern" instead of country. The midwesterners have as much country areas than much of the south, but you never hear their accents called country.
